Z7 firmware wishlist
« on: October 07, 2018, 05:37:23 pm »

I have serious doubts Nikon will improve this camera with firmware updates but I'll give them the benefit of doubt.

As I'm starting to know the camera I will add things that I would like to see improved.

Feel free to add your observations.

Playing with the FTZ adapter and a manual focus Voigtlander I'm starting to use focus peaking and 1:1 zoom. I would like the camera to get out the 100% zoom when I half press the shutter button. I now have the zoom set on the OK button and the ergonomics aren't ideal, it's a stretch to reach and difficult to maintain critical focus.

I have configured my F1 button to zoom for the same reason. But yes, the option to move out of zoom with a half press would be great!

Now, I would even prefer the option to see both the full view and zoom at the same time in a configurable way.

Other ideas:
- group AF
- an easier activation of AF tracking
- the possibility to have both virtual horizon and histogram at the same time
- the possibility to associate virtual horizon to a button

Cheers,
Bernard

Hi Bernard,

Not sure if the Z1 has zebras, I assume so, but I don't remember for the reviews. You can maybe use the same technique I use in my Sony A7r II that also does not allow to show histogram at the same time of horizon level. I set up zebras to 100+ (this is probably Sony nomemclature, it means that it shows zebras for things that are basically blow-out, in zebras 0 is pure black, and 100 pure white, it is a percentage scale independent of the DR of the camera). So, I know if it is level and if I'm blowing-out anything. It does not indicate if anything is pure black, that an histogram will...

Just in case this is useful to you... not everybody likes zebras...

P.D.: Apologies for the off-topic

Regards,

David

Thanks David, I'll see whether that could be used as a workaround on the Z7.

Cheers,
Bernard

I would like an additional choice for the touch screen.... touch screen controls active EXCEPT shutter release!  I am finding I occasionally take pictures of the floor or wall when tilting the screen!

There is an icon on LCD that allows you to turn shutter release off.

Yes, indeed... I discovered it after my last post.

Two things I'd love to see implemented in a firmware update:
 - False color for exposure, one of the best features of the Red camera systems. It's like having your image mapped to the Zone system.
 - As that is unlikely, Zebras for still use.
 - The ability to sync timecode to an external source. This might be possible over bluetooth, and if it were possible, would make the camera pro-class for double system video shooting. (Does any DSLR/mirrorless do this? It seems so odd to me that cameras like the Sony a7s/r/... will generate timecode, but have no ability to sync with the rest of the world.)
