Epson P800 can not select Roll Paper for Fine Art?
« on: September 29, 2018, 12:13:55 am »

I have a new Epson P800 and want to print on Epson Hot Press Natural using roll paper.
The roll loaded fine but the option to select the roll paper to print from is not there. The only options are
Cut Sheet
Cut Sheet Manual Front Fine Art
Cut Sheet Manual Front Poster Board

This is not really thick paper. If I select a PK profile then Roll Paper selection appears and it prints fine.
I am using a profile from Epson based on the Epson Ultra smooth Fine Art Paper.
I checked the User Guide and there is no mention of this paper not being available for Roll Feed.
I am using Mirage Print,

Any ideas why Epson paper won't print roll with an Epson Profile?
If this matte paper can't be used on the roll then I have wasted my money on the printer.

So the work around was to select Epson Archival Mate as the base paper.
I don't know how the affects the profile compared to the correct Ultra Smooth Fine Art but the print came out great.

I print, using Lightroom, to a P800 using Hot Press Bright roll. The media type field is set to Hot Press Bright and this allows me to select roll. The media type field also has the possibility of Fine Art, but I guess that that selects papers that Epson calls Fine Art.

This has nothing to do with the profile. The paper format options are associated with the Media Type. As long as Epson Hot Press Natural is offered in rolls, which it is:  SKU: S042323 , the Epson P800 driver should provide for selecting roll as the paper format.

I recommend that instead of using Mirage, do a test to see whether printing directly from the Epson driver you can access the roll setting for this Media Type - I forget whether it is in the Printer tab of the driver, or in Page Set-Up from your printing application, but one of the two. That will tell you whether the problem is with your Epson driver installation or with Mirage.

Good advise. I tried it with the driver in Photoshop and this is what I got.
The driver doesn't allow you to use the roll feed for any "Fine Art Papers" (eg Ultra Smooth Fine Art Matte) , only "Matte Papers" (eg Archival Matte)
As soon as you take it off Archival Matte and select Ultra Smooth you get a message saying to use the front feed.
This is silly as the specs say the roll can be used for papers 0.25-0.70mm and the Hot Press Natural paper is only 0.47mm
Maybe the base material of Ultra Smooth Fine Art is thicker?

Why are you selecting Ultra-Smooth Fine Art when you are printing on Hot Press Natural? There is a Media Type for Hot Press Natural. Try using that Media Type and see whether it allows for roll paper.

After some finger pointing from both Epson and Mirage support the problem is not solved but at least i now know what the problem is.
Capital letters because this may affect a lot of people ...

YOU CAN NOT PRINT IN HIGH DETAIL USING THE ROLL SHEET FEED

That applies for other papers such as Canson as well.
As soon as you select the High Quality options like 2880 x 1440, the "Roll" source disappears.
Go back to Fast Quality 1440 x 720 (or  perhaps Normal Quality on some papers) and Roll is there as a paper source.

Is there anyone who can explain that?
