Recently referred to, here on LuLa, as hack.

Yeah, right:

I wish I'd hacked as much.

Me too. If the "hack"-er would explain his perspective, it might provide some interesting discussion.

I just find his work very dull. For example, his portrait of Diana. Compare to Testino.

(I don't know his work well. If there's something I'm missing, please point me to it.)

I don't know either photographer's work well, but you've certainly picked one of the worst examples that I can see on Donovan's website portrait portfolio. Almost all of Donovan's pictures of Diana appear to be a "formal portraits", whereas the Testino shoot that I see online was much more "fashion and fun" and Diana looks very relaxed. Perhaps that's what each photographer was asked to do? I don't know. The Donovan portrait (1990) was taken when Diana was dealing with all kinds of marital and personal issues. The Testino shoot (1997) seems to have been just a month before her death, and a year after her divorce. Perhaps she was feeling more happy and free at that time.

Where these two photographers sit compared to Avedon, Bailey, Penn, Newman and others, I'm not qualified to offer an informed opinion.
