I done did do it!
« on: August 14, 2018, 11:07:01 am »

I finally gave in and ordered a Sony A7rIII with 24-70 and 70-200mm lenses. My credit card is still smoldering! I am looking forward to using it on a trip to Newfoundland next month. I had gotten away from full-frame a couple of years ago, but I have heard so many great things about the Sony system that I could not resist. Let's hope I don't regret it!

The daring thing was to do it just one week before the Nikon Z7 announcement.

Those lenses are great - I have both, just the A7Rii though for me.  I think you'll love it!

I've had the Sony kit for a few days now and am very impressed. I have not done any "serious" photography, just some snaps in the yard and a nearby park. But the camera handles well and the lenses (24-70 and 70-200) seem like stellar performers so far. The camera body is quite a bit more compact and lighter than my previous FF outfit (Nikon D600) because of no mirror or pentaprism. As an added bonus, since my secondary camera is a Sony RX10, I have 2 cameras with the idiosyncratic Sony menu system, making things easier for me to remember.

I hate to rain on this parade, but I am puzzled by the “stellar performance” assessment of the lenses, when, for instance, 70-200 is not known to be a particularly good lens, and especially not when compared to the new Canon 70-200/4. Then again, maybe it is just good enough when incorporated into the rest of Sony ecosystem.

Slobo, I have the f/2.8 versions of both and I've had zero reasons to complain.  They may not technically be as good in some regards, but for practical usage and shooting they're lovely lenses delivering great results in my experience.  Combined with the overall package, it's great.  They may not be the best (in fact, I know they're not), but sometimes that makes little to no practical difference (and other times it does, certainly).

I think it's perfectly reasonable to describe them as stellar if that's someone's experience.  They don't need to be the best to be stellar.

Does anyone know when the Sony 24-105 is expected to become available?

I've not seen a firm date anywhere.  B&H are taking orders, so it's probably less than 3 months but that's not a particularly useful time frame :(
