New profiles are really very good

I must say that I’m impressed by the new process version colour profiles.

I’m using a Leica SL which produces DNGs natively and under the previous process version had a tendency to look a bit too blue / green, using the built in Adobe profile. I rolled my own profiles using the Luminar tool from Andreas Torgers but the results always seemed a little off. The current process works very nicely and even the auxiliary profiles (Landscape, Color and Portrait) are very usable. In the past, they produced nasty results. Presumably Adobe has finally hired a world class colour expert and improved colour handling across their entire range of products.

Adobe has been at the bleeding edge of "world class colour" expertise for over two decades. All you are seeing is the product of technological evolution in a field that is still relatively young by historical standards.

I'm still blown away by the accuracy of Adobe's ACR 4.4 default profile in CS5 on a recently purchased used 2008 Pentax K200D to replace my K100D. I was told several years ago by either program engineer Eric Chan or Chris Cox over on an Adobe forum about camera profiles discussion that Pentax provided more data about how they handle and render the camera's Auto white balancing compared to other camera brands/models.

No details were discussed but after processing and editing over 1000 Raw PEFs I see how the WB is critical for a hand in glove fit with Adobe's canned profiles. I've been shooting some fresh California peaches on a blue towel under various LED and CFL lighting with the subject right next to my workstation and I always first doubt the rendering of ACR 4.4 and switch to the other ones including a custom profile and always have to return to the ACR 4.4 because I don't first get the exact hue of white balance in the scene.

WB really has a profound effect on my perception of scene accuracy. The K200D canned profiles are a step up and these are old cameras and old Adobe software. They're ALWAYS better than the camera's jpeg rendering.

I think that the colour science is important, although I suspect that a lot of it was discovered last century.

I also suspect that Adobe will have made some use of all the photo libraries that it has acquired to tune their algorithms using neural net techniques.

That said, they still haven’t got their Auto button to provide full range pics (ie, Auto results can almost always be improved by adjusting the Black / white points).

I’m not that interested in colour accuracy (for its own sake) but presumably delta-e is relevant only to neutral profiles.

Its revenant to define color accuracy which is the difference between a reference (what a color value IS) and a color value one GETS and thus the color accuracy. And this has nothing to do with any kind of profile per se.
