How serious is the message "RESTART THE PRINTER. IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTS CALL HP SUPPORT"?  I ask because I can get it virtually for free.

I've seen this message a few times but it has always gone away with a restart. Does yours show it every time it starts up? Even if it does, my guess is that it wouldn't be a huge fix but of course more info is needed.
