PS CC, Nik and smart objects
« on: May 13, 2018, 08:40:42 am »

I have found that if I open a raw from LR in PS as a smart object and then apply one of the Nik plugins (SFX or Color Efex) to it, trying to re-edit it later crashes PS every time. The Nik plugin shows several progress bars (loading image, scaling image, preparing image) but gets no further. This is on a Mac under High Sierra, using the latest version of PS CC.

The "don't create new layer" fix which has been suggested on the Net (such as here) for other problems with the first save doesn't make any difference.

Is this a known issue? Is there a fix?

I've not heard of a general problem in this area, Jeremy. I do sometimes see some minor artefacts at the edges though.

I use Photoshop Elements 2018 with an add-on, Elements+, that allows the use of smart objects with smart filters. This is on a Mac and High Sierra.

I have the Nik Collection and Define and Sharpener Pro work perfectly as smart filters and allow re-edits. Color Efex, OTOH, causes PSE 2018 to crash immediately.

I also have PSE 13 with Elements+ on Windows 10 and all Nik applications work perfectly as smart filters including Color Efex.

None of this is really an issue for me as I only use Define and Sharpener Pro as smart filters.

PS Smart Objects and Nik filters have been my major way of working for years and I never had a problem with it. Still working perfectly. I'm on Windows 10 latest version.

Adjust plugin settings so that after clicking ok the effect applies to the current layer instead of a separate one.

btw... Nik is now DXO... https://download-center.dxo.com/nikcollection/v1/Mac/DxO_NikCollection.dmg
