3D effects
« on: May 05, 2018, 08:54:09 am »

Hi,

Shooting yesterday I got an unintended "3D" effect. It is clearly about color and nothing else and it actually spoils a decent image:

As you can see, the young lady with the two kids is standing in front of the gentleman with the yellow shirt. But, the yellow shirt pops into foreground.

Now, that is the way I perceive it. It may be that other observers see the image differently.

Best regards
Erik

It's fundamental colour theory. Cool colours regress (sink back or float) while warm colours advance (come at you).

The most extreme combination of this effect causes Chromostereopsis.

My initial impression ws not that as there is enough of the lady's jacket blocking the yellow shirt behind that my mind immediately interpreted it correctly.  But if I look away and then just immediately go to the yellow shirt when i look back, it does momentarily give that impression, probably due to the phenomenon that Bo described.

Well,

The lady in front has a head twice the size of the gentleman behind. That is a strong perspective clue that the lady is in the front. But, it seems that perception of color may, at least temporarily, dominate over perspective.

Best regards
Erik

Just change the colour of the shirt. Take five minutes.

Exactly. Perhaps make the children’s clothes yellow. Seems it needs a little something to pop the image. Unless the photographer feels that will draw too much attention to the foreground.
