Gettig MF system..
« on: October 01, 2006, 01:02:14 pm »

Hi all,

I am having to get an medium format slr system and am just looking for a bit of help or any compelling reasons to get one over the other. (my budget is quite limited)

I need an slr rather than rangefinder camera.
I need ability to use both film and digital backs.
I have no need for auto focus.
I am happy to go without in camera metering but can do so with metered finders.
It would be useful to have a simple shift set up with this camera but will also probably, budget depending, combine this camera with one such as cambo / horseman etc that can take both film and digital backs to go really wide and get shifts in package that can go with mf camera....plus d.back could be used on my 54 for extra movements, etc also.

Work is architecture, interiors, exteriors, personal artwork (landscapes etc), stock.

I currently use dslr for many jobs and stock but would happily use this mf camera with d.back such as aptus 17 to cover these. Film back would be used for personal work (large (40x30 inch)print quality  that dslr does not come close to mf film for from my own experience and testing ) + any jobs requiring that quality. The type of work I do really does not need the speed etc of dslr but stock must be shot on digital.

I see my options as:

hasselblad v system: simple, great lenses, swc for 38mm lens, 56mm shift option (40mm plus pc mutar) metered finder option, waist level finder, all digital backs made for, horseman swd etc takes v backs.

mamiya 645 afd: can use mamiya manual focus lenses, built in meter, simple hartblei shift option, all backs available, horseman swd etc takes afd backs.

contax 645: top lenses as in v series, built in meter, simple hartblei shift option, most backs avaialble but not on horseman swd etc...problems here can be availability, cost of wlf etc.

I have at some point used all of these cameras and am happy shooting with any of them.

thanks for any tips.

IMO

V mount is most widely used for interchanging with view cameras cambos etc.

Mam is great value as long as you dont use flash - I cant abide 125 synch so it makes it a non starter for me

Mam is less widely available fitting for changing to view cameras

Contax - same comments as Mamiya

Have you considered rolie V mount and rollie - any lense investments will work with the new camera

-------------

In terms of your choice of back I think a great value of Eylike/Sinar is that the 'system plates' are changable so with these backs you are not tied into one system

Thanks Morgan,

Rollei could be interesting option..rollei is the one mf system I know little about...although I see the older kits are pretty good price (6008 / intergral etc)

rollei v mount? what is that?
i know they do a 55 shift lens but it does seem to be hugely expensive to get ..certainly more than 40mm/pc mutar combo.

do you happen to know how the rollei slr's are with digital backs..ie. do they also take phase / leaf?
if not and rollei meant going eyelike / sinar if I liked thier backs are you saying I could simply then change the adapter plate to allow it to fit to cambo / horseamn etc  with v etc adpater plate?

simply in tersm of the camera itself the v series does appeal to me the most..i am just tyring to make sure in terms of its use with db's, metered prisms, simple shift option, etc.

It it my belief that a v mount back will fit on a rollie body

but there may be some lenses that struggle to gain infinity focus

look at capture group www.kapturegroup.com

OR canvas further opinion from here

Rollei are expensive lenses but have decent flash synch

Hi
If you can rent MFD systems where you live do it. Try them all if you can with at least Hasselblad H2 and the Mamiya 645 AFDII. In the past week there has been a lot of big news in MFD!! Now there is talk that Mamiya & Phase may merge or work together? But really find a system that you like the look & feel of.
Thanks Denis

Marc, why not go for a 6x9 view camera with digital back? Might be best for your type of work.

Thanks guys,

I have actually worked with all the cameras mentioned and although they all have their plus points I am happy working with any of them. They all have their individual reasons for being the best but overall all give good use.

I also use a Mamiya 7 very happily and in many ways would go for the zd as I shoot at 100 iso 95 % of the time anyway but do want the option of a digital back so as to use it for shift work.

Graham, I will be using the digital back with a view and shift camera but do need the mf slr, portability for much of my work also.

Even for the stock work although my current 1ds easily gives enough quality and usuabilty I would much rather be shooting with mf in those situations as the extra quality of the digital and film shots will allow me much larger prints for my print sales from my personal work on the same shoots..and of course vica-verca.
