Epson 3800 set up over ethernet and windows 10

I've had no issue setting up the printer on my mac, but this is the first time I've tried to set it up on Windows 10.  (I'm new to printing anything with a PC).

I've searched the forum and the web, but it's an older printer with a new OS, so I'm confused.

What is the procedure to set up a this printer on Windows 10?  It's attached by ethernet cable to my wifi router.  I ran the Epson Config utility and tried to install the driver but no luck yet.  The driver installer seems to want me to choose a port manually.  But, I don't know which port might be correct, if any.  Epson config utility does see the printer.  The printer is too far from the workstation to run a USB cable.

Any suggestions?  Maybe my order of doing things is incorrect?  Or do I need to do a complete manual configuration from the printer LCD menu?

I assume you're "attached" to the WiFi router by WiFi from your computer?  Most likely, there's a different subnet between the WiFi and the hardwired Ethernet, so the driver won't see the printer automatically.  The easiest way to do this is to set the printer to a specific IP address within the same subnet as your computer and then manually add an Ethernet port via the driver and set it to the appropriate IP address (that of the printer) and then away you go.  Once set in this manner, it should be highly robust.

Some folks will tell you not to bother and use USB, but that's not necessary.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I am a little bit in need of information about the terminology here so I can do this. I know this is a bit to ask, but can you create a list of steps and define the terms used?  That would be most helpful.

Things I don't know such as "Do I install the driver first or last?"  and things like that too.

I've gotten it working, but not really sure how.  Something in the Windows set up where I entered an IP address that I saw somewhere else...  But at least it seems to be working at last!

It works, until it stops at random.  Reporting paper feed error, or just stops.  Not good.  Printed from the mac, all is ok, no issue.

Any suggestions?  Seems I've heard of these issues sometime before on the forum.

Hi Bruce,

I assume from what you have written that in the past you have run the 3880 on a USB Cable.  Perhaps your surroundings have changed and now your printer is farther from your computer station.  There's a rather old "rule" that one should not attempt to run a printer on a USB cable longer than 10'.  However, from 2010 'til 2017 I had operated an Epson 9900 on a 45' run of USB cables with absolutely no issues at all.  I now use the same 3 cables for the P7000, and again, no problem.  Visit your local computer store and ask for Active USB Extension Cables.  They usually come in 5M (15') lengths and you can chain up to 6 of these cables apparently.  If you do need more than 45', make sure they can be returned if they don't work for your application.

Thanks for the links.  I've finally got it working.  This stuff is pretty confusing they way it's described, especially for those like me, who don't really understand the "under the hood" of networking.  I will say that the mac performed this stuff more simply though, just one click after setting the items in the printer LCD display.  Windows was a little more confusing...
