New Pana 8K global shutter sensor...
« on: February 21, 2018, 04:56:10 pm »

Has Pana just killed Sony, and pretty much everybody else?

This tech seems much more realistic that the recently announced Sony 1.46mp global shutter sensor. The Sony announcement now looks like a “let’s announce something related to global shutter before Pana drops their bomb” kind of thing...

Cheers,
Bernard

Pretty hard to tell at this stage. Everybody wants global shutter, but everybody wants dynamic range, film-like hilight rolloff, great color and low light performance more. This tech seems to suggest that they’re doing two shutters that combine the tech Red uses in their motion mounts with a traditional rolling shutter behind it. That would work, but it’s almost surely going to cause some light loss, so it will be interesting to see what the ISO response and noise levels look like.

Interesting announcement for sure.

As for Sony’s announcement, on the other hand, I think you called it just about right. It’s a 1.5K sensor, or something like that, so it’s either a proof of concept or a it’s intended for machine vision or some other use, certainly not digital cinematography.

The announcement of Panasonic it is really interesting... but I fear that it is still a bit far from mass production. They are introducing it in conferences right now.

Everybody is playing with that technology right now. Here you have an article from Sony that uses that technology to build a foveon like sensor - http://www.newsshooter.com/2017/09/13/sony-go-organic-with-a-new-vertical-colour-separation-sensor/ .

Reading the Panasonic paper it looks like this will be the best way to reduce pixel size while getting lots of light. For photography global shutter may not be that interesting, but being able to gather light per pixel in 60 degree angle... that will make lens design simplier...
