I've seen it written as f:/ or just f/ Is there a definitive way to write f-stop?

How about "f-stop?"
Actually, I don't recall ever seeing f:/ , so I stick with f/ .
Since the "f" stands for the focal length of the lens, "f/8" means "focal length of lens divided by 8," which is correct. There is no need for a colon.

Exactly. It's just a mathematical expression.

And you don't even need a medical because there's no colon involved. Not much help if its a prostate question, though. Certainly separates the men from the boys.

I've seen f:\ in Windows but never describing f-stop.
Since it's a ratio, I think f:8 or f/8 would technically be correct but f/8 seems to be what most people use.

To keep things simple /f is also written F, F8 for example. Or possibly 1:8.
In my lenses I see even 1:4/135 marking which is mathematically interesting.

Thanks for the input and for backing my comment to a local site who chose the F:/ Stop as a logo. They have since dropped the : so all is right again with the universe.

I think this has been mentioned on these pages before, but this seems like a good place to bring it up again:
Battle at f-stop ridge.

Right, you'll get totally stopped down for that.
