I hope to go on my American Road Trip in a couple of weeks.  Well, my wife is going along so I'm not sure if that counts. :) We're starting in Santa Fe, New Mexico, going through Utah and ending in Sedona, Arizona stopping along the way in Monument Valley, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Grand Staircase Escalante, Bryce, Zion and the Grand Canyon.  Sights galore.  Plenty of long, straight, and open roads in Indian country too.  Here's the Google navigation map https://goo.gl/maps/aYu7cBDMrCG2

The trip will be spread over 16 days and should run about 2000 miles with all the ins and outs and local driving at each destination.  But I'm still a little nervous about the driving as I'm older now and can fall asleep on a dime.  My wife hates to drive.  One thing that works for me is when I'm tired and I start falling asleep, is to pull off the road for a 20 minute power nap.  I can go another couple of hours then.

Alan,

If you go down to Arizona from Utah on US 160, you'll go across a large chunk of the Navajo reservation. I remember going down through there once. Miles and miles and miles and miles of nothing; an occasional house off in the distance. Finally we passed a highway sign that said, "Caution. Congested Area." There was one house about a half mile off the road. Not a soul in sight. Highway department hard at work with not enough to do.

Someone in the highway department obviously had a sense of humor.  After they stuck that sign into the road, the whole crew probably went to the bar and had a good laugh over a few cold beers.

I'd have joined 'em if I'd been there.

I will be embarking on just such a trip in about 4 weeks: just over 2,000 miles each way. Leesburg, VA to Chinle, AZ and back.

I've driven across the US many times. Most miles covered in one day: 1,000. Little Rock Arkansas to Las Cruces, New Mexico across the width of Texas. Took 18 hours, but I really don't care for West Texas and was determined to get beyond it before stopping.

Every other time across, I taken major highways. This time, I'm not in a great hurry, so I'm considering avoiding highways and taking rural routes to better see the country.

Good idea, Stephen. There's a lot to see and photograph on those back roads -- even in West Texas. In pilot training in Big Spring Texas long ago I had a friend who described the local environment this way: "If it grows it'll stick ya. If it flies it'll sting ya. If it crawls it'll bite ya." I'm afraid he was right on the money. But it's an interesting part of the country -- as are most parts.

Well, I got back from the road trip with my wife going to the southwest national parks.  I posted some in Flickr.  https://www.flickr.com/photos/alanklein2000/sets/72157694819890421
No I didn't fall asleep but did get some vertigo with those cliffs on some of the roads.  Beautiful country - glad I got a chance to finally see it.  I traveled light with a Sony 1" which also shoots 4K.  Got some great clips too but only photos on FLickr.
Thanks to all. Alan.

Not even close.  8)

Drive a day in GB and you're in the ocean.  Drive a day in Europe and you've traversed a zillion villages.  I'm talking ROAD trip.

Well, a Portuguese photographer just recently finished a one year road trip around Europe, in a van:

It's in Portuguese, but you get the gist of it.
