Image transfer problems
« on: September 24, 2006, 12:02:13 pm »

Hi,

I'm using an xD Card reader/writer to transfer jpg images from my PC onto a 64MB xD Card. The PC clearly shows that the pics are stored on the card but when I put the card into my Fujifilm S7000, the camera says there are no images. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Ed

The two most likely causes:

(1) There's a standard file format layout, with a DCIM directory at the top, then a directory named something like 100XXXXX (last five chars varying per camera maker) that contains images that are named like XXXX0001.JPG (four chars that vary, and a four-digit number). If you're copying them over with a different directory structure or differently styled file names, the camera will likely ignore them.

(2) Many cameras' don't know how to display images that are of a different resolution than the ones taken by the camera.

Thanks for the quick response.

I did some experimenting:

I took some pictures and transferred them to my PC while deleting them on the card. Without altering them in any way I immediately transferred them back to the card and they don't show up in the camera. I used an Olympus and a Fuji camera and I get the same result on both. Now what?

I checked with Fujifilm and they tell me that it is not possible to write to an xD Card without corrupting it to the point that it has to be reformatted. I can't believe that. Does anyone know if this is true? If yes, what's the point of having a card writer?

Thanks,

I found out from Fujifilm that their cameras use the Fat 16 file system, which means that the images would have to be converted to that system before writing them to an xD card, which may not be possible at all.
