i1Profiler writes profile to wrong monitor
« on: January 17, 2018, 03:48:09 pm »

I'm hoping someone here can help.  I'm on Win10.  I've been running two dell monitors on an nVidia 740 and profiling with i1Profiler and an i1Display Pro.  No issues.  I just bought a BenQ SW monitor and a second nVidia 1050 card.  When I run i1Profiler and select a monitor it correctly moves to that monitor.  But when I proceed with the measurements and create a profile it attaches the profile to one of the other monitors.  I tried doing an uninstall and reinstall of i1Profiler but that didn't help.

But it does measure colors from the display you desire, just doesn't 'assign' it to the correct display after?

OK, then the profile itself should be fine. It doesn't sound like an i1Profiler issue but perhaps Windows. I'm pretty piss-poor under Windows for troubleshooting but this may help:

Thanks Andrew.  I have been able to reassign the profiles to the correct monitor using the Windows color management utility.

Tried all that but it didn't help.  I imagine X-rite has a forum - I'll see if I can get a response from them.  If I do I'll report back.

I had a similar problem with Nvidia video card and two Dell monitors. It started following a Windows 10 update from Microsoft and drove me mad for a couple of days until I figured out my Nvidia driver needed updating.

Give it a try. The drivers are on their website and it is a quick fix if it works.

Good luck.

No joy I'm afraid.  Thanks anyway!

One final comment.

Does the onset of the problem coincide with a win 10 update by Microsoft? Mine did, and it was pretty easy to roll back the update whilst I researched and diagnosed the problem. In my research it appears that quite frequently these updates which, depending on your settings, automatically download and install without prior notification, can sometimes "hose" the setup of certain peripherals.

Hope you find a solution. I recall the frustration of my experience.

No change to Win10 so I don't think that is it.

What was updated on your customer's computer (i1Profiler/Win/GPU driver)?  On the x-rite site the last release of i1Profiler for a PC is May, 2017.  I found the "check for update now" in i1Profiler and I'm up-to-date.

It was resolved after recent Win 10 update - the issue was quite nasty, monitor profiles were attached in a right way, but the system was using opposite profiles to displays, I lost a while to figure out wtf was wrong.

I received a reply from x-rite which identifies the issue:

-------------------------------------------
Rory,

In an effort to resolve your support Case, the following comment has been added.  Please review this comment, and respond as indicated.

Comment: The Windows 10 operating system has had its share of color management glitches. I would try the following:

1. If you right click on your desktop and select “Display Settings”, you should see the monitor setup with three numbered boxes. Click on “Identify” under the boxes and make a note of which number pops up on which monitor. Make sure that the “Multiple displays” has “Extend these displays” selected.
2. Now go to Control Panel > Color Management. You need to have three displays in the “Device” drop down. If not, there is likely a problem with the graphics card installation. Click on “Identify monitors” button. Do the numbers that pop up on each monitor agree with the numbers that Display Settings gave you in step #1?
3. If the monitor numeric designation in Display Settings and Color Management do not match, there is a Windows OS problem. We’ve seen two possible solutions:
a. The simplest solution and the one I’d try first is to go to Control Panel > Device Manager and open the “Monitors” list. Right-click and choose “Uninstall” for each of the monitors. After all monitor drivers are uninstalled, reboot the computer and the monitor drivers will re-enumerate. This will many times resolve the mismatch in Display Settings and Color Management.
b. The second, more complex solution is to reinstall the most current video card drivers. I see that you’ve already done that.

-------------------------------------------

The display settings and color management enumerations are different.  I tried uninstalling all the monitors in the device manager and rebooting.  Unfortunately this did not work.   My Win10 is up-to-date.  At least now I know what is wrong.
