Sony A7SII for Landscapes?
« on: January 06, 2018, 09:48:26 am »

As mostly a landscape / nature photographer, I'm looking at switching to Sony from Nikon to have a lighter setup.  I do like the smoothness and dynamic range of working with full frame images, however I rarely print large.  So what really is the difference of using the a7sII (12 MP)  vs the a7RII?  Is the a7sII really just for night photography?  With today's a7RIII, is there still a place for the a7sII?  Just curious.  My ulimate landscape camera would be the Nikon 850, but it is getting so heavy to carry with the 24-70 lens.

Having had a lot of Nikons and now a lot of Sonys, I think the A7II would be just fine.  It is 20mp, and you can get one for a lot less than the A7RIII, the current flagship. I have the A7RII, and it is way more camera than I have the skills to maximize

It's an exceptional camera that can also go to very high ISOs - it is a bit more video oriented than the other a7 series cameras but that does not preclude it from being what is probably the best image quality 12mp sensor camera ever made.  There's nothing wrong with it as long as 12 megapixels aren't limiting for you.  As mentioned above, the a7 (not s and not r) at 24 megapixels (not 20) might be better suited and those are on sale right now for a very low price.  The a7 II is better but it does have the same sensor as the original a7.  An R is not needed unless you need that level of resolution but they do have some other features that are great for landscape like electronic first curtain (fully electronic shutter capability on the III) etc.  It basically comes down to three things, cost, resolution, and feature set on which of the now 7 models of a7 you decide to go with.

Beware Hugh, the Sony cameras might be a bit lighter than Nikon's but their lenses aren't. I moved from Nikon to Fuji X-T2 (APS-C) and haven't looked back. 24Mpx is plenty for printing huge.

While that is true for the f/2.8 GM lenses, it is not true for the f/4 lenses.  If you don't need f/2.8, you can put together a dramatically lighter kit than Nikon's equivalent.  If you want to compare APS-C, you would need to compare it to something like a a6300 or a6500.  I'm not knocking Fuiji here, I love the X-T2, just keeping it real ;)

Thanks for all your thoughts.  After looking at the lenses I would need to sell and repurchase, I think I will stick with my Nikon and use my Olympus system for when weight is an issue.  There are too many choices out there, all of which produce excellent images.  Yes, the Fuji would be the sweeet spot.  But when weight is not an issue, I do like looking in the large viewfinder of the Nikon.  I probably won't be able to pick up Nikon 850 until June.

Most used camera today is my A7s which I purchased used for a $1,000.
I have a new A7rII and use it mostly for landscapes that I will be printing large.
The A7s is amazing for street and indoor low light photography most times with the Loxia 50mm f/2 attached.
Just a great combination. I would try and find a used one if you can.

I'm surprised that there has been no discussion of the new Panasonic GH5s.  Geeze the body is $2500.

One reason is the 10mp. For landscape work everyone seems to want 24 to 40+
Second would be buying an entire new set of lenses.
Maybe as a second body but then you have to get all new lenses just for that camera.
I have 4 Sony's and all my lenses fit all the cameras.
