Stephen Shore
« on: January 02, 2018, 08:10:09 am »

I suspect Stephen has been mentioned more than once before on LuLa. This is a guy after my own heart. He reminds me very much of Walker Evans, maybe with a touch of Robert Frank thrown in. Here's a link to some of his American photographs that strike a chord in me. This is just one of his styles.

Love his work. Did you know that he is very active on Instagram?

Very much agree with you Russ about that "sensory bridge" between Walker and Robert. Both seemed to have that still/quiet ability to wait for the shot to work it's way to them informed by the inner workings of spirit.
Walker's wife of 10 years, Isabelle, lives not too far from me here along the Reach~ frail, but can you imagine 10 years married to the man? She did a wonderful little memoir of her years with Walker.
I only came to know of her proximity when my CT lawyer asked me if I was aware that his Swiss mother-in-law is my neighbor. Her current husband is a wonderful and vibrant soul~

I spent the night hours after midnight shooting blind as the super moon shadows crept along the Reach. As I held the 60 sec shots, one for black one for light, I continually repeated to myself the urging to "wait for the light to come to you", so it was with much pleasure I read your post. Have enjoyed you since my first moments on Lula... Fine wine... Best, p.
Looking forward to getting at the raws from this shoot later today... Hoping even one indicated it was trying it's best to make it's way to me~

For Stephen Shore fans, there is a big retrospective show of his work at MOMA in New York.
I love the work of Walker Evans and Robert Frank, but I can't warm up to any of Shore's work.

One whole wall of the exhibit is devoted to a demonstration that Shore has printed the same image in five different sizes!!!

Also at MOMA is a stunning exhibit of (non-photographic) works of Louise Bourgeois.

Warming up: me neither. Touches me as deeply as does Eggleston. Nothing about even less, for this watcher.

Doesn't work for me... Walker and Frank? Nope, can't see it.
I prefer Eggleston, in fact.

PS: ok, I just did an experiment by sharing the link on FB. A friend who "knows nothing about photography" perticularly liked what I thought was one of the worst, an on-camera flash portrait of a guy in a fast-food. It was "real" for her because it was a photo she would have/could have/has taken.

So the photos are not about the things in them, they are about the viewer who imagines having taken them... they are hypothetical images of the viewer's past.

Personally, I still think they suck  ;D

Okay. I surrender.
But unlike Shore's, your photographs are very good, Russ!   ;)

Eric

And that's the difference: one shows you something you want to know about and understand; the other, for me, just points and shoots. I could do that too, but why would I?

Was it Shore or another guy drove up and down Sunset Strip shooting all the buildings on both sides of the road? How thrilling; must have inspired Google.
