Selected details in a landscape
« on: December 16, 2017, 08:58:51 am »

It's easy just to choose a wide angle lens and take everything in. It may or may not be a compelling shot. What I like a lot is to find a small part of a landscape that stands out because the light, the contrasts, the simplicity, the emotion it invokes, .... Here are some examples from the Dolomites in Alpe di Siusi which is one of my favorite locations. They are all shot with long lenses like 70-200 or longer.

Thanks very much and glad you liked them.

One more rare one is here and rare means that during the 8 years I have visited this place several times per year I have only had this once.

It is not the technical perfection, tremendous locations nor the terrific light that amazes me it is the wonderful compositions that you manage. Hans you constantly give me something to aim for. Ken

Finding a small part of the beauty and significance of creation is also the heart of street photography, and I think street -- relationships between people and people and their environment -- is something photography does far more effectively than does painting.

Painting, on the other hand, usually deals with landscape in a way that touches the soul more effectively than photography. Painting can make changes in linear perspective and color that convey transcendental signals landscape photography can't begin to convey.

But here we see a case where photography's veracity brings a dimension to these scenes that I doubt painting can equal. It's a different and powerful kind of thing for landscape, and I rarely see it. But here it is! Again, Bravo! Hans.

Thanks a lot to everyone. Some of the compositions are a result of coming a number of times to the same location and by studying the images and remember what I learned from that for the next compositions.Quite frankly I did not see all the different compositions on the first visit to this location. It was overwhelming. I have had discussions about going back to the same locations and some have told me that they would never go back. Having the experience myself of doing this more than most would do, I can only say that I find it not only rewarding but also it refines the eye for different compositions and the sometimes small details that include or avoid. So I can only underline that I recommend to go back and revisit the same locations at different times of year and simply enjoy. Last time, alas, I was met with another group of photographers which were flying drones .... what can I say this was terrible.

So, Hans, listening to Heraclitus, not the other lot, was quite rewarding for you. Great set of images.

Thanks a lot for the comments. As Slobodan comments stepping back in the same river again is never the same again and that is the point of going back. I have had amazing weather situations over the years that were simply unbelievable. People ask me if I get bored of doing workshops in the same locations and I can truthfully say no. Not only do I have new people coming and many coming back from other workshops which is a great bonus. That alone does not make it boring, but the locations are just so different with light, weather and even colours are very different from one year to the next. And as mentioned it is a bonus to know the locations so one can look for the smalle details that can easily be overlooked.

Thanks again for the comments.
