Lee Filter Hood and Polarizer
« on: December 03, 2017, 05:32:30 am »

I am looking at adding a Lee Wide-angle filter hood to my set-up; widest lens will be 18mm in 35mm terms, hence I think I will need the wide-angle version.

If anyone has this hood I have a couple of questions...

I use the Lee 105mm Polarizer a lot and I have seen comments that it can be used with the hood, but no details on how it is fixed or how easy it is to adjust once fitted.  Can anyone explain how the polarizer fits and works with the hood?

Apart from a sun-shade, I am thinking of using it as a rain-hood to keep rain off the filters when shooting in wet conditions (I live in the UK so its wet more often than sunny!).  Would this be workable ?

Thanks

I have this hood, Phil, which is the same in many respects. I can't say anything about the polarizer, but I don't feel it's a great rain hood. The bellows help when raindrops are being blown towards you, but the filter slots are exposed to raindrops falling vertically or from the side. In light rain I cover the filter slots with the camera strap or a cloth.

Thanks John - agree the slots wont help and I would drape a cloth over the filters to stop drips (which is what I do today).

Still can't work out how the polarizer fits/works

There is a 105mm filter ring that you buy that mounts via the hoods brass machines screws to the front of the hood. Your 105mm filter than screws in normally to that.

You can also get square cirpol filters and an adapter that allows you to rotate filter separately from hood (if using grad filters at same time). Check B&H website.
