Abruzzo light
« on: November 22, 2017, 11:55:04 am »

I wan a small workshop in Abruzzo a couple of weeks ago. We finally got the snow on November 7. Here are two examples of almost the same scene in two very different lighting conditions. Both shot with the Canon 5DSR and the 100.400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens at 321mm and 400mm respectively. In both pictures you can see the old castle at Rocca Calascio and the Santa Maria della Pietà chapel below it.

Before the snow and in morning light

the afternoon after the snow came during the night before

I like both. One more contemplative, the other more dramatic.

Great images. I like the first one a lot. The soft rolling hills vs more jagged ridgelines with the castle in the middle is a phenomenal vista.

Both are lovely and this is a fine example of the effect of light on the landscape.

#2!  I just wish the clouds at the top weren't covering the mountains.

I love that they are telephoto shots.

They're both glorious, but the light in the second is something special.

Both images are simply magnificent.
Since they are such different images (as far as lighting conditions go) they are, to me anyway, not really directly comparable.

Thanks very much for all the comments. Yes, they are very different so much so that it's almost not the same place. I have visited this area many times since I came the first time in the autumn of 2007. It never lets me down and with the high altitude of the plateau (1500-1800 meters) there are often clouds drifting over the plateau and sometimes even several layers.

Another example from the same week:

And one from 10 years ago shot with the Canon 5D and the 300 f/4 lens.

Just to state the obvious that coming back to the same locations is great and worth while.

The juxtaposition of hard/ soft and hot/ cold plus the tremendous light make them both wonderful images. Oh and the subject matter is pretty special too. Ken

Umm ... time for _another_ bottle of Brunello or what's the local stuff there? ... Marvelous.
