No, not a tiny version. It is almost the full size image. The Portrait Mode uses the 56mm (FF equivalent) f/2.4 lens.

Sorry, I intended to ask: is this a small Ganapati figure photographed at close range or a larger one photographed from a more standard portrait distance? (IOW, is the bokeh computational or intrinsic to the X’s longer lens?)

The idol was around 18” from the iPhone.

I just took an image (see attachment). Is it an organic fall-off/bokeh or computed? The focus was on the front of the remote.

Surprisingly good. I like the first one a lot, bokeh is impressive.

My buddy and partner in PG (Mac Holbert) was teaching here this week, we had lunch, this is the very first image taken on my iPhone X which came Friday. You get to see the 'original' and what one of the Portrait modes did. Again the first photo looks really good. Surprising amount of background blur for a 6mm f/2.4 lens, even at fairly close range (not too close…Mac looks normally proportioned) in front of a tiny sensor. Some good math assisting the lens, I suspect.    The overtly enhanced stuff is OTT for my taste, but if you can’t dial it back now I imagine you’ll soon be able to.

I agree. One can toggle the various 'modes' back and forth or just use Photo's (which I can't yet fully figure out) to play. But these two shots of Mac are 100% defaults, auto everything.

DxO has just reviewed the X.

On bokeh: “The iPhone X’s improved telephoto lens also ensures sharper portraits in both indoor and outdoor conditions. The bokeh simulation algorithm applied in Portrait mode is also one of the nicer ones we’ve seen, producing a pleasant depth-of-field effect, a good bokeh shape with nice circular spectral highlights, and very repeatable results. The background blur isn’t as strong as we’ve seen for other devices (notably the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 ), but that gives the X’s bokeh a slightly more natural appearance. The X lost points for noticeable failures in depth estimation, with elements in the foreground slightly blurred (although not as blurred as the background) whether they’re connected to the portrait subject or not. Some artifacts and masking errors around the portrait are visible on 100% crops, too, but they won’t be particularly noticeable in images displayed on small scale.”
