Best dedicated L bracket for D850
« on: November 02, 2017, 10:53:25 am »

Usually i'm buying RRS with great success... but for the D850 i'm not sure !

I'm using my camera on tripod with arca heads ( B2, D4... ), and 50% of the time, the camera is in portrait position and tethered, so i need some space for the cable and the RRS ultralight is fixed.

What's the best choice ?

The RRS ( two models ), the kirk, the sunway ? an other one ?

RRS MODULAR PLATE

RRS
RRS ULTRALIGHT L-PLATE

Kirk
BL-D850

Sunway
PNL-D850

I have liked my 3 Kirk fitted solid L brackets - nice sturdy well-designed chunks of metal. One of them saved my 6D's bacon when I fell and a corner of the camera (L bracket) hit a boulder, hard. L bracket had a scratch, but didn't deform. I don't have the 850 though. I have never used RRS L brackets.

There's the Arca-Swiss:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/723386-REG/Arca_Swiss_802306_Universal_L_Bracket.html
Expensive, but works on multiple bodies (with extra base plate).  Tool-less adjustment for tethering and anti-twist pins for the base.

While i'm an arca's fan, i've find this L not sturdy enough + i prefer to leave the L on the body all the time...
thanks anyway !

You may also want to check promediagear.com.  They are well known in the movie and video industry, offer outstanding products, and excellent support.  They do have L brackets for both the D850 and D850 with grip.  I am not associated with the company in any way but have often found the functionality and usability of their L-brackets superior to the usual companies still photographers use...

Give them a call or send them an email, I have been able to get stuff from them if I indicated an urgent need and they went the extra mile to get me something I needed despite the site saying out of stock.

Just bought the RRS as well but if i see the Sunway i think that is the one i wanted + very cheap.
If the marking are OK (?) it is a very good deal. (  it combines the modular RSS and the light RRS in a way it did on the RRS d800e L bracket)

i'm in the same boat as you, but i'm not sure that Sunway are using similar good quality material...

I am returning the RSS light weight L-bracket and getting the Kirk L-plate. I don't like the space between the left of the camera and the bracket. It does make the cable doors slightly easier to open but is too narrow to accommodate a USB 3 cable when shooting tethered. In any case there is insufficient offset from the camera body to accommodate the head of a right angle USB cable. If you are shooting tethered and using a compact one piece L-plate, you should consider the Promedia plate bracket extension.

or that one...
CRS-Cable-Relief-Spacer

but so far, i manage not to use one with my D800.

My best L Bracket still the arca swiss / phase one for DF... i enjoy the square attachment, so you can attach it to the head in two position ! But for the cable and the nikon, it won't be a good option.

Just received the 'normal' RRS d850 bracket and indeed it is a piece of art; but i think a bit overdone. I would have liked to have the lightplate but they made that in a way you cannot shift it if you need cable clearance; so i see you point.
anyway- i have it and it works well- so i can do my work...

considering prices... still, the subway doesn't look like as sturdy as the others... but maybe i'm wrong.

When you extend the L in order to use the cable, is the RRS MODULAR PLATE sturdy enough ?
For that use, the kirk seems stronger.

I was considering this one for my next round of bodies.  Curious where you feel it's not sturdy - flex in the L? Play between plates and rods?  Thanks.

screws and material looks like a generic L bracket that i've bought years ago from amazon... and on portrait position with a D800, it isn't as sturdy as my RRS !

Maybe this one is better, and being 3 to 4 times less expensive, maybe it's worth a try...

I decided to buy just the base component of the RRS bracket. I don't shoot vertically that often and
when I do just drop the tripod head 90 degrees (Arca Swiss D4)
