Diptych (experiment)
« on: October 28, 2017, 02:04:20 pm »

This one wasn't intended at the time of shooting, but somehow imposed on me when I recognized the two single frames.
But I am not sure at all, whether this is "something" or rather not ...
(Yes I know, I didn't get rid of the rubbish, yet. Will also try B&W.)

It's a very worthwhile experiment.

With these two images, I think the diptych would work better if the white space between the two were a little wider. With the images this close together I find my eye bouncing between them, making comparisons that aren't really important.

A few example observations:
1.  You have lined the horizons up very well.
2.  With the two this close I am a little bothered by the different tonalities in the ocean. Perhaps they could be brought tonally closer with more processing, but I'm not sure.
3.  Similarly, but to a lesser degree with the skies.

So I think it is worth playing around a bit more with these. You may well end up wanting to keep them just as they are.

+1, but a worthy pursuit and effort.

thank you, honestly. I mean, I hesitated, too. Might just not be enough for a interesting picture.

To the others: Basically it's funny, because the different tones of each of the skies and seas where what I found interesting, you know.

And, it's a good point a bit more distance between the two frames would have been good. I think thats true.

Thanks again!

Diptychs are worth pursuing, but require just the right photographs these two are ideal.

The trick is to create a dynamic between the two complimentary photographs without the movement becoming a back and forth “tennis match” - very difficult to avoid, which is why, perhaps, triptychs are more common.

Something like this balances the tonal values of both images:

However if this was my work I would go one step further and warp it a bit to balance the form of the two images as well:

And of course another option is to invert the left-right order of the two images to create a more intriguing effect:

It's nice to see lots of possibilities.
Of these so far, I think I find the last the most intriguing.

Oh, thank you Alain! Some good ideas to think about!

I ended up with a new version that took up some of your hints, without being too strict. (It's a matter of taste, for some reason I do not like if everything is _too_ aligned.)

Also converted in B/W and changed the aspect ratio.

Still not sure whether it's a good picture, somehow I think there's still something missing (from the side of / as a subject), but it was a nice practice.

Thanks again to all!

That one works nicely, and the spacing between feels right to me.
I hope you will keep experimenting and show us the results.

I like it. Your version gives a classical look to the image.  Well done.

I agree with Alain's suggestion, and would add also a little bit of colour.

This, or something like that, is what I found missing to make it a better picture. Without anything it's rather an empty stage. Great to have it exemplified now.
