Buying a used Hasselblad H1
« on: September 12, 2006, 02:44:05 pm »

I am considering getting a used H1, and want to know what is the typical exposure counts before the camera should be serviced. Also, is there a spec regarding the life of electro-mechanical parts of H1 camera?

My back has done 50,000 exposures in just under 2 years. I'll get it serviced this winter at about the 60,000 frame mark. I had a loaner back a few weeks ago to asses a lens fault and it had 150,000 frames on it's counter. My P25 rocked a bit on the back as the catch was warn but apart fron the paint being worn away by the grip it seemed fine. It's probably fair to compare an H1's frames to car miles. 100k upwards things need checking carefully.

heard from a busy catalog house that the lens shutters are starting to fail at around 65.000 shots....i was wondering why H1s are fairly cheap on ebay..now i know....
any DSLRs shutter is rated more then that...at 800$ and those are body-shutters...

Canon advertised the 5D as having a mirror system capable of 30,000+ shots. Not quite the spec that Hasselblad H1's are capable of. 65,000 frames in medium format is about 5416 rolls of film! All taken on one lens. My kit comprises 4 lenses and at 25,000 frames a year (2083 rolls of film eqv) It will take me another 8 years before I need to replace my shutters :-) My old Zeiss distagon shutters were resprung about every 3 years :-(

as far as i know the 1D/1Ds series are rated at 250.000 frames....30.000 frames has to be a joke that would be less then 850 rolls...
the catalogue house found out because their shutters started to fail within the first year....it is one thing to have your V lens shutters checked every year but for the shutters to fail is something completely different...

After more than 3 years, I'm just getting my *third* shutter in my original 1Ds. The mirror box seems ok, but the shutter is bouncing at high speeds.
Ratings ? Pshawwww !
But this is one case where I'm not complaining - that poor thing has really worked and worked.

I've seen the statistics: A digital camera takes 7x the frames of a film camera over the same timespan.

I'm out of date because the 5D now has a 100,000 shot shutter and the 1DSmk2 has a shutter durability of 200,000 cycles, which is 30% higher than in the EOS-1D Quoting from Canon site. It is still all pretty remarkable stuff. The thing is, I'm pretty sure that if the catalogue house were using Canon or Nikon gear they would probably have the same level of equipment failures. Kit these days is pretty robust but that kind of round the clock usage is extreme to say the least. If you calculate the cost of film and processing they have saved by going digital then the cameras and lenses are probably seen as disposables or consumables.

did not know that statistic was out there, but that seems right, funny as that sounds! thanks for sharing that!

about the H1...they used something before they used the H1s (i believe RZs) and never had that kind of failure rate, which is why they really noticed it with the H1s...
was at Samys yesterday and looked at digibacks ...they had them all on H1s...the salesperson and i could not find a setting on the camera and i mentioned that it is not my favorite camera because of ergonomics ...he replied: well, they don't seem to hold up to well either....and this is a guy on the salesfloor....but they sold one out the door while i was there...
