The new 14-24 especially.

Nikon used to be king of the UWAs, but, aside from the PC-E 19, they've now fallen well behind Canon, Sony and Sigma, and their offerings no longer hold up in the corners of current high-resolution sensors.

The rumor of the 19mm PCE was about two years before it actually came...

So ...

this type of lenses is for pro... a pro (in architecture) needs a bunch of lenses... the 24 PC-E isn't good enough... especially with a D850.
19 + 45 + 85... we need a lens between the 19 and the 45... 24 or 28 or 35... but a lens !

meanwhile, as a nikon shooter... for architecture i keep my arca RM3D... for PC, canon offering is much better now, even if the 19 PC-E is superior to their 17...

+ 1
The 24mm is due for an update...
The 45PCE and especially the 85mmPCE are good enough...
and 24mm is a very important for the specialized customers that use it... It is my favourite wide angle...

The 14-24mm is still very good - amazing optic!- i would like however a fixed focal 14mm that is even better... especially better resistance for flare and corner sharpness.

Although I take a lot of reviews of UWA's with a pinch of salt, shooting test charts at incredibly close distances isn't really similar to most peoples uses and you can see something like the 16-35mm or new 24-70mm VR do much better at lens rentals testing at infinity.

I'm going off tests at infinity (both MTFs and test shots). The 14-24 no longer holds up. The 16-35 doesn't stand out, and certainly falls short of the Canon and Sony 16-35 f/2.8 lenses, the Canon 11-24 and Sony 12-24 lenses.. And the 24-70 isn't really a UWA. The only Nikon UWA that really stands out is the PC-E 19.

The 20mm F/1.8 looks pretty good stopped down but I'd agree Nikon is overdue to release an update to the 17-35mm F/2.8, the 16-35mm VR looks more or less the same as the Sony F/4 version to me, both weak at the 35mm end.

I like very much the 24mm 1.8g Nikkor
Build quality is not Pro, but the optics are better than you would expect for 700€
lightweight, small and good flare resistance.

Before buying my 20 sigma art, i've made a side by side comparison 20 ART vs 20 Nikon... the Art was really better, but i believe that the nikon was lemon...

Odds are that Nikon has been building from scratch an FX mirrorless lens lineup.

I would think that it will be reasonably strong already when they announce it.

We’ll see what they have decided regarding which platform (DSLR or mirrorless) to focus on for the missing wide glass. ;)

Cheers,
Bernard
