EFI ES-2000 and Argyll CMS compatibility...
« on: October 06, 2017, 07:41:08 am »

I'm finding used or open box EFI Fiery ES-2000 spectros with their Colorprofiler software on e-bay. Item condition is stated as good. Returns are accepted in most cases.

1- Is it safe to go this way when buying from e-bay?

2- These are much cheaper than x-rite's i1 Pro 2 altho it seems as if they are the same hardware. Is this too good to be true ?

3- Seems like their software is not for Photo Printing, which is my intent. Does it work with Argyll CMS ? Has anyone tried this combo? It is not listed on Argyll CMS' page. The i1 Pro 2 is, however.

Thx

You are better off posting this to the ArgyllCMS Listserve and you will get a prompt answer back.  I went to the EFI website and it sure looks like an X-Rite i1Pro2

It's rebranded i1Pro2 and it will work with ArgyllCMS (as well as any other software that supports this sensor).

Are you sure about that ?
How does this spectro appear to the OS ? as an EFI unit or i1Pro2 ? I would have assumed the former, which might make X-Rite software, at least, not support it directly.
Maybe not quite so versatile as it might at first seem.

It appears as i1Pro, and it only has different badge on the housing. Of course - it will not let you create profiles with X-Rite i1Profiler software like i1Photo Pro2 (RGB) or i1Publish Pro2 (RGB, CMYK, n-dev, devlink), but it will let you read targets using i1Profiler tool. The only difference between i1Pro2 (no matter what badge) is the license file in the memory of device, that enables i1Profiler profile creation modules, so that the sensor works as a license key. Apart from that it's just the same sensor.

It appears as i1Pro,
Not i1Pro2 ?
I'm curious if it fully reads with all the M0 etc options that an i1Pro can't do.

i1Pro2, M0-M1-M2 modes are fully supported. It's just an i1Pro2 without i1Profiler profiling modules license file. I'm cooperating as a color management consultant with a huge photo album producer and Canon, they have a couple of these EFI-2000s. They work exactly like an i1Pro2.

Thanks for that.

On that basis I've just picked one up for £320. If all you say is true and the eBay item description is accurate, a great bargain.

As I've already got a dongle based licence for i1Profiler it should all work.

Looks like there is a brand new one on Ebay for auction.  Starting bid is $399 and there are six days left.

If all you say is true
It was :-)
Thanks again, nice to have a brand new i1Pro2l to work with. Now the fun of comparing it to the other 4 spectros in the office ;-)

Then the fun of trying out Fiery Profiler and seeing where that fits in the range of software to hand.

Aside from Argyll and i1 Profiler, what other software packages are available for printer profiling with the ES-2000 (free or less than USD $300)?

At that price point, I only know of Profile Prism. However that doesn't use a spectrophotometer, only a flatbed scanner. In my experience it's much worse than sticking with OEM profiles.

Thanks - Just noticed DisplayCAL which is a GUI-based system uses Argyll.

Is far as you guys know, is it relatively easy to use or is there a steep learning curve for printer profiling ?

That's just for display profiling, not printers.

Argyll is reputedly very capable, but even with the GUIs needs a good knowledge of CM to use.

I still think you should take on the advice given previously and not start to concern yourself with custom printer profiling until you've been printing for a while and have problems that only custom profiling will solve.

For printer profiling this is a good tutorial:  https://www.ludd.ltu.se/~torger/photography/argyll-print.html#toc0  Written by a LuLa contributor who has developed a new software program to do camera profiling.  there is no GUI for doing printer profiling and you need to know how to run command line programs.  I do all my profiling using Argyll and get excellent results.

Well there is a GUI for printer profilling; http://www.russellcottrell.com/photo/LittleArgyllGUI.asp but you still need to know what it all means.
