Rocks in my Head (An Open Thread)
« on: October 04, 2017, 08:30:39 pm »

Rocks in my head is what many people think about my obsession with the forms, textures and details one finds in rocks -- whether in a rocky landscape, or a close up. Based on a few posts here, I don't think I'm the only one. So feel free to contribute!

I'll start with two shots from an area called West Head, near Lockeport, NS, taken on different days.

I have rocks in my head too, but I’ve never been able to capture any nearly as well as your second shot. That’s gorgeous!

The second is my favorite, too. Lovely.

Tomorrow I'll try to find a couple of mine from Blue Rocks, near Lunenburg, NS.

Fabulous, and thanks for pointing out the thread. It looks as if there hasn't been a lot of traffic there lately. Perhaps the new "Landscape Showcase" section of The Art of Photography can inspire some new contributions.

Here are four more from Nova Scotia: Blue Rocks near Lunenburg.
I think I'll post these over on Remarkable Rocks as well.

Great stuff, Eric. I especially like the first one  (I found the same, or very similar, rock myself). For anyone wondering why Blue Rocks, Nova Scotia is called Blue Rocks, here are some colour images.

It wasn't until about my third or fourth visit to Lunenburg that I paid attention when someone suggested I ought to visit "Blue Rocks."
It is a remarkable location, and the rocks change so much in different light conditions.

Gneiss pic!   :)

The glaciers of the last ice age created some beautiful landscape.

Peggy's Cove Lighthouse. Usually teeming with tourists. This April day began cold and overcast. As the weather broke, the tourists arrived in droves, but I managed to get a couple of shots in before they were all over the rocks.

A popular rock climbing wall by the Longmont Dam Reservoir.  You might be able to see some climbing apparatus on the left side of the image.

For me, taking pictures is a lot safer than climbing. I used to be quite nimble but my balance and coordination has been somewhat compromised since I had a small TIA during my quad bypass surgery. The change has taken some time to get used to – tumbling down a river-bank a few weeks ago was a good reminder. Fortunately, more damage to my pride than my body.  :)

My wife, bundled up against the chilly fog, near Hunt's Point. My ignorance of geology means that I simple categorize rocky landscapes by their form, texture and colour. Although Peggy's Cove has one of the most impressive expanses of huge, smooth rock formations, this type of landscape does appear now and then in other places along the south shore.
