Canada, Australia, New Zealand - those that immediately come to mind.  How were they wussy?  At its peak during WWII, Australia had the 4th largest air force in the world.  Considering the population and economic capacity at the time, that was an enormous effort.  How is that not contributing?

The guns of the average citizen had nothing to do with the US impact on the war - it was the US economic and industrial capacity and if it had not been hamstrung by internal politics and entered the war sooner, it would have been over sooner.

An armed American citizenry is not to fight in foreign wars.  That's what the standing army does as also required by the Constitution.  An armed citizenry is to protect the country from invasion from foreign armies (like Switzerland) and from tyranny from its own government if it becomes tyrannical.  The fact it hasn't  had a need to rise up against our government is a tribute to the founders brilliant writing of the constitution.  It also comes from the trust citizens  have in the constitution which has limited the power of those who would try to take over.  The Civil War and Roosevelt's failed attempt to pack the Supreme Court with his quislings were the two times I can think of when things became really serious.

Easy if everyone else has 20 shoguns... ;)
Well, there are gun collectors, sword collectors, automobile collectors, sculpture, etc.  The gun collectors often never or rarely shoot them. But they talk incessantly about their attributes, power, and technical specifications.

I've even heard there are people who collect cameras and never shoot them.  But they talk incessantly about their attributes, power, and technical specifications.  Maybe we should lock up gun and camera collectors.  You never will know when they'll break down and go crazily off the reservation.  :)

A couple of years ago in Michigan two guys both licensed to carry a concealed weapon got into a road rage incident.  They ended up killing each other which begs the question who was the good guy!
In NY we have the SAFE Act which bans assault weapons and those that had them before the law have a certain amount of time to register them.  This of course has led to many attempts to repeal the SAFE Act which have all failed.  I find that most people against the law have never even read it, are totally misinformed on how it was passed, and just listen to NRA talking points about it.  The Act was passed in response to the murders of the kids in Connecticut.  NY is one of the few states that actually did something!  The law isn't perfect but then what law is!  Nevada needs to consider it's own SAFE Act there is no reason for anyone to own the weapons that shooter had.  The whole premise of the government coming to get you is just an excuse by some, let's be honest, sick, paranoid idiots to have thousands of rounds of ammunition and 50 guns.  If the government did go rogue that moron with an assault gun will be ground under the treads of an M1 Tank or turned to dust by a drone!  The very act of collecting all that stuff is the mark of someone that shouldn't have access to weapons.  Oh and then there's the if everyone had a gun the Vegas shooting wouldn't have happened crowd.  Imagine twenty-two thousand people pulling out guns in the dark not knowing who the shooter was, there would be hundreds dead!  I was born in Spanish Harlem in the 50's and even as a young kid had to learn to fight but to this day have never owned a gun.

Alan made a good point, that there are 400+ million guns in the U.S.

Now, let's compare mass shootings per gun in Europe and here! I am sure that per gunitaâ„¢ number would make Pieter's head totally explode  :P

What did England do to tighten up on leasing trucks?

Made it illegal under penalty of 20 years imprisonment in the Tower of London.
No parole but, on the plus side, no beheading.

Made what illegal?  How does that tighten up anything?  Doesn't the fact you killed someone get you at least 20 years anyway.  Tightening up to me means that some form of background investigation is done before you can lease.

Why do you want to shut down others right of free speech?  If discussing these things upsets you, then stop looking at the thread.

Just jesting with you, Alan. There's no imprisonment in the Tower of London anymore. But you are correct, they did place restrictions on leasing/renting vans and trucks. I'm not sure what the heightened security checks are.

You mean England stopped drawing and quartering people?

Yup - it failed the Health & Safety regulations [/in-jest]

But, on a more serious note, the penalty was 'hung, drawn and quartered'. And, if you can face the gory details, Wikipedia gives a good precis of what that exactly entailed.

It seems the shooter did not have a machine gun but modified semi-automatic rifles with a "bump stock" which is legal.  A bump stock allows the finger to operate the trigger hundreds of times a minute simulating an automatic machine gun.  What's interesting is that the shooter spent months putting the attack together.  It was planned in great detail with cameras set up in the hotel hall to watch for cops approaching, picking out the right room with a good view of the country and western music show, ammunition and dozens of arms bought in different stores over many months all with legal background checks.  He also set up a transfer of $100,000 to his girlfriend in the Philippines.  He apparently planned to kill himself at the end as he shot himself in the mouth with a handgun, not with his rifle.  So it wasn't some recent flipping out due to drugs or psychological breakdown where he acted impulsively.  Everything was planned in great detail over a long period of time.

Since fully automatic weapons are already illegal, "bump stock" should be made illegal too.

Pretty gory. At least they cut the head of before quartering.  I thought they quartered while alive.  This is the point I was making before that there's evil in everyone.  Think of the people at the highest stations of power carrying out these acts of what we consider evil today.  ISIS does it regularly.  Maybe that's why this guy did what he did.  There's been so much gore and inhuman treatment lately.  We become inured to it so it doesn't seem so terrible after awhile.  There use to be a show on radio when I was a kid called The Shadow.  The announcer at the intro would come on and say, "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows......"

Researchers in the United States have determined that the world is flat.
Despite the fact that it is technically possible to have a world series and not invite other countries, apparently other countries do exist.
US citizens are therefore cautioned about visiting other countries in case they go off the edge.
Indeed it is recommended that they do not visit even other states, but remain in the safety of a few miles from where they were born.

The following are some tips if you do travel.
Travel reportedly has dangerous effects.
Travel may expand the mind, causing pressure on the eye balls.
You may find other strange problems, such as US coins not fitting in vending machines without force.
You may find a more complicated language called English and even other languages altogether.

Highly unhealthy food (but in smaller portions) may be obtained from McDonalds. What US citizens call coffee is obtainable from Starbucks.
These are unfortunately in most cities.
Grilled Cheese and Macaroni is not a vegetable in most countries.

It is not necessary when you do travel to announce that you are from the US.
They will figure it out.
You can be recognised at airports as the ones carrying your shoes.
