Evening falls over Owyhee hills
« on: September 30, 2017, 10:23:55 pm »

This is looking south over the Owyhee Canyon area in SE Oregon, from Three Fingers Rock. If you are teased by not knowing what lies to the right in the background of this pic well so was I. I had to climb up onto a high pinnacle (the most easterly of the three fingers) to get this view and there was another pinnacle of rock that blocked my view to the right, and a cliff directly in front of me, so I could not get any more background view to the right. I waited out a cold rainstorm in the hopes that a light show would eventually appear, as there were clear skies to the west (right), and I was not disappointed. Next time I’m at this location I’ll attempt to climb the west-most finger to the right so my view to the right is not blocked.

What makes this photo somewhat spectacular is that it is a documentation of a spectacular event – a nice sunset. I took lots of shots, of course, and struggled to find a simple clean composition, given the complex texture in both the sky and the land. Like viewing a painting, I like to back away and squint and look for a pleasing design. This fails that test, but it still works for me, thanks to the spectacular light that presented itself.

Enjoy. It was a magical evening complete with coyotes howling!

Wonderful. Sunset in the mountains -- do you stay the night, or use lights to hike back out?

I often stay the night at a location, but in this case my truck was parked less than two miles away so I hiked out with headlamp. Hard to resist a heated camper with comfy bed. 😀

Thanks everyone for the positive comments.
