Aperture/Photoshop workflow
« on: September 06, 2006, 10:37:04 pm »

I am still trying to get a handle on an ideal Aperture/Photoshop/Aperture workflow. I am running AP on in iMac Intel duocore, and want to adopt PSCS2, which will not run well (I understand) on the Intel Mac.  I currently use PS Elements, but when I adopt PSCS2 and until Adobe releases PSCS2 Universal, it seems I will have to transfer files to my G4 laptop (OS10.4.7) by way of my external hard drive, work on the image file in PS , then transfer the file back to the iMac via the hard drive. This seems highly cumbersome. Can any one comment on the workflow and offer any suggestions? Any one have info on when Adobe will release the Universal version of PSCS2?
Thanks,
Jamie

Jamie,
I can't fully answer your questions as I don't much use Aperture. But you could make your life much easier by connecting your Macs with an Ethernet cable and use file sharing instead of of using a hard drive, which is, as you say, cumbersome!

Francois is correct, a shared folder to transfer files on your network is the way to go in your situation.

BTW, there will be no PS CS 2 UB (say that three times fast). You will need to upgrade to PS CS 3 when it is released in Q1 '07.

I am running Photoshop CS2 on an 20" iMac 2GHz Intel Core Duo and it isn't that bad at all. I do have 2 GB of RAM so that might help? It may even be comparable to what you are using now if your present Mac is a little older or a Laptop that isn't quite as hefty as the Desktops. If you are going to buy CS2 anyways why not give it a try, you might be suprised. If you do install the whole CS2 Suite there is an issue with Version Cue that you will have to be aware of but you can disable it and fix any problems. If you can choose not to install Version Cue through Custom install that would probably be best, but if not here's a fix (  [a href=\"http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060518195305900]http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?sto...060518195305900[/url]  ). Besides that one issue though I have been fine with the performance and can patiently wait for the release of CS3.

Again if you are just installing Photoshop and not the whole CS2 Suite I don't think you have to worry about the Version Cue issue.

I sometimes run Photoshop on an Intel-based MacBook Pro (2 GHz Core Duo with 2 GB RAM) and find the performance to be better than expected. With OS 10.4.8  Apple has improved the performance of Rosetta (the software used to run non-native aps like PS CS2 on the new Intel hardware) giving Photoshop a noticeable speed boost.
