f11 Magazine Suspended

Sadly...
Quote
The idea of a magazine about photography and photographers - rather than cameras and accessories - found a loyal and appreciative audience around the world. I like to think that our approach was more cerebral than many other titles, and that we were able to rise above the perils of pixel peeping, equipment worship, and the banal. Our mission was to expose the work of photographers, display their collections, and describe their personal journeys. We were never short of content as we made the world our home.

Unfortunately, the concept of a magazine free to readers and funded entirely by advertising support proved much more difficult to sustain as a business proposition.

An unfortunate loss, but I guess advertising is so dependant on the wants and desires of "gear heads". I hope they are able to regroup.

Too bad, I enjoyed it. I am still subscribed to Fraction Magazine, not sure how well known it is.

So, if the f/11 magazine was available here on Luminous-Landscape say for $3 USD each for all back copies as well as new would you purchase them?

How is that to be understood?

f/11 has always been a free download, so don't understand your question.

Because it was a free download and required a lot of work it could not be maintained.  If all the past editions and new ones were available for $3.00 each would you purchase them?  They would be reformated to contain no advertising.  The past issues and new ones would be available at $3 each here at LuLa.

We are in an age that many sites and publications are having difficulty meeting overhead.  Magazines even paid ones like Popular Photography have disappeared.  I have been looking at the f/11 e-publication for many years and find a value in the content.  However, a publication like F/11 can't survive if there is no income.  I am considering bringing on the f/11 collection as well as future issues and offering them at a modest 3 USD each.  So, would you pay $3 for the publication. If not then it is project that we won't pursue and this fine publication will fade away.

Too bad.
I would probably pay for some issues at $3.

I am sad to read this post. I was very fortunate to have F11 magazine feature my work in issue 17.

This is the first time I've heard of the f11 Magazine.  A shame it couldn't survive in its former state.  I'd be willing to pay the modest $3 for such a quality photo magazine.

I would if a specific issue were of interest to me.  I'd also pay an increased LULA annual membership rate (i.e. say, $24 instead of $12 - a discount as a benefit of an annual "subscription) if there was a membership option that included the magazine.

Despite spending far too many daily hours on the Internet trawling photography sites - mostly fashion-oriented - I never came across the late magazine. Not only did they need more advertising, they needed to do some more of their own.

I wonder if it would make any sort of good sense for such magazines to cross-reference/link one another? The obvious fear might appear to be that of losing readership to competitors, but would that really happen? If free to the "consumer" then why would said person stop looking at any one of them? There are so many websites already where people turn themselves into clowns and "test" cameras and lenses and so on, and every new thing they touch is better than the last, and a definite keeper for the tester... right. Who needs those sites? Maybe some people actually do - God help us. Perhaps a content-rich sort of virtual publication might work better today.

I tried to get such a thing underway myself recently, and quickly realised that it needs a far younger person to do it, which is difficult: youngsters need to be out there making money and I don't, but I no longer have either the health or energy of a young man upon which to draw, I only have some experience, and that's not enough to do the whole thing myself. Worse, it needs cooperation from influential and busy people and the ability to suit their schedules. "At the drop of a hat" is, for me, a thing of the distant past: I need lots of warning before I can gird up my loins and go do anything sixty or seventy klicks away from home. I was offered a day's shooting on a new superyacht a couple of weeks ago but couldn't go due to all sorts of damned problems of my own. It puts age into perspective somewhat; not a lot positive to say for it.

But would I pay anything to look at old stuff, as in past issues? No. I would perhaps pay to buy some (paper) leading, current fashion magazines, despite being out of the industry for years, but not at today's prices, and not when most of the pictures are eventually to be found online for free if you look hard enough; truth to tell, the making-of videos are usually more exciting than the printed shots!

As I have thought recently, the day of a new, long-running printed paper anything is probably past. At least, short of some miracle, I think that it is for me. One problem I have always had with photography-related magazines has been that I can't easily dump them. I ended up with cubic feet of French PHOTO as well as the later American version of it, and the American Black and White which had to be given away or dumped when I simply had no space left for the kids to put their luggage when they came avisiting. (I did end up saving a few of the French ones, though! Magazines, I mean; I have no French kids.)

Was? Were? Anyone can download the entire collection for free here http://www.f11magazine.com/all.html

And since I've been onboard since day one, of course I wouldn't pay you...?

I'm probably being thick, but are you trying to take over f/11? as in purchasing the rights, I mean.

On first read, I thought this to be a great idea. Then I began thinking... Lu-La is great for some things, but not others. If f/11 were combined into Lu-La, would it simply morph into more Lu-La? You see, the advantage of having media independent of each other is we get a broader range of ideas and presentations and perspectives - which is a good thing. Media consolidation reduces this.

That being said, I'm finding I'm not completely enamoured with any of the landscape and nature photography sites and mags (Light & Landscape, LandscapePhotographyMag, Nature TTL, etc.) - each seems to lack something (different for each), so I tend to dip in and dip out as the need/interest/quality arises. Of course, if anyone were to come up with the formula to keep me (for one) interested and paying (LensWork has due to its high quality of photography; Lu-La has because it's only $12/year and even then...) then I assume they would take over the market. But alas...

I'm not familiar with the f11 zine (not that familiar with f/11 either!) so without checking it out I can't say whether or not I'd pay for it specifically. But I am willing to and in fact do pay for the privilege of viewing/listening to various media sans advertising, to the point where not offering this as an option is turning into a deal killer.

No, LuLa has no interest in taking it over.  We were considering helping the owner and publisher with a means for distribution to help him continue publishing it.  So, you wouldn't be paying me but the publisher so he can continue to publish.  LuLa would be the conduit.  There are other publications that charge a subscription and have advertising and possibly that is the model that needs to be considered here.  Since the topic was brought up I thought I'd probe our community and see how people felt.

Frankly, I hate to see good things go away and I believe you are going to see more of this over time.
