Nikkor AF-S 200-400mm E FL ED Rumored for the Year's End
« on: June 28, 2017, 07:33:26 pm »

Nikon is rumored to announce a new Nikkor AF-S 200-400mm f/4E FL ED lens towards the end of 2017. The lens will be equipped with a built-in 1.4x extender just like the latest Canon version. Optical quality is expected to be extremely high and so will be the price (the current models is priced at $6,996.95). The new lens will mainly be targeted at sports photographers. Shipping should start before the 2018 FIFA World Cup that will take place in Russia from June 14th to July 15th, 2018.

The 200-400mm has been on the list of lenses that will get updated with a fluorite element (FL). I will have more information on this in the coming months.

We'll get that some day. Nikon invented that lens 10 years ago, they won't let Canon lead on their turf for long.

I would personnally prefer a 200-500f4, but...

Cheers,
Bernard

If it has the built-in 1.4x TC, it will be an effective 200-560mm ...

Nice to dream...but the price tag of these showcase lenses put them out of reach of the mere mortals.

Besides they are not that easy to use.

In many situations where you need subject isolation over uncontrolled busy backgrounds they are simply mandatory though.

Such as when you're photographing bull riders across an arena...assuming you haven't lost your sanity and thought it was a good idea to be IN the arena. I don't run or climb fences as fast as I used to, nor have I become senile...yet. I'm staying outside.

The real answer is to find someone with gear acquisition syndrome.  Wait until they buy it, tire of it, and then want to sell it.  That's how I got my 300mm f/2.8 and 500mm f/4 at fair prices.

That's one good example. :)

Absolutely! The only one I bought new is my 400mm f2.8 since the earlier Nikons were way too heavy for my weak constitution. But there are great deals to be had second hand indeed.

As I sit on a mint 200-400 Vr,2, the thought of the new one has not interested me.  I find it very hard to beat the 200-500 F5.6.  It's the lens I reach for now, over the 200-400, although wide open the 200-400 IMO has a bit better bokeh, it's just not a hand holding lens, at least for me.  The 200-500 can be hand held and for wild life work I love it, especially birds, where I still prefer the optical viewfinder of the D810 (really only time I prefer it).  For the best work @ 400 500mm, I still prefer a tripod on the 200-500, but it can at least be done.  The 200-400 with the hood is massive and sure you can hand hold it briefly, but not for periods of time like I do with the 200-500.  The ONLY fault I find on the 200-500 is the cheap flimsy hood.

Glad to see Nikon continues to improve a great lens, but as previous posted the cost and weight are out of sight and I just don't think it will that much sharper than a great copy of the 200-500, in the same focal ranges.
