I am far from being an expert Illustrator user, so until one comes along you may want to see if your file is truly corrupt or recoverable

First step and most important Make a copy of your original file and work on this for any fixes.

Try these and see if you have any luck:

1.  Create a new blank document in Illustrator and then goto File > Place and select your .ai copy to place it
IF it works fine just save with a new name.

or

1.  Change the file extension on your copy from .ai to .pdf.

Can you view your document?

If yes it sounds like the Metadata corrupt in the original .ai file and needs to be removed and the file saved as .pdf for insertion back into an illustrator document.  If no then it could be that the document is not recoverable

Fix recovery illustrator documents, create a backup copy of it on the local hard drive, and then complete one or more of the tasks in this section to fix recovery illustrator documents:
1. Install the latest version of Illustrator
2. Copy the file to your hard drive
3. Place the damaged Illustrator file in a new Illustrator file
Important: This solution doesn't work if you didn't select Create Compatible PDF File in the Illustrator Native Format Options dialog box when you saved the original file.
And if it doesn’t work you may try Illustrator Recovery Toolbox:
