The missing part of the video tutorials
« on: May 28, 2017, 05:18:21 pm »

I'll get to the point. Where is the step-by-step printing tutorial for v.10? I've made the transition from an HP B9180 to Epson P800. I've painfully transitioned from Aperture to C1 by reviewing the videos. I've downloaded the icc profiles for Canson & Ilford Baryta papers into ColorSync in my iMac (OS X). Now I'm confused as to colour management - printer or C1? Still, Kevin, I'd appreciate a more detailed explanation than the print video.

Capture One is admittedly not the best printing tool.  As I have explained on other videos, I use Capture One to output to TIFF or JPEG depending on subject etc. and then output through ImagePrint from Colorbyte.  For me this the best option and smoothest for many reasons not to mention super good profiles and ease of use.  If you want you can print through C1 but admittedly I haven't done so for a while.  Did you view this video?  https://luminous-landscape.com/videos/guide-capture-one-pro-7/printing/ . I have been pushing the folks at Phase One to consider a better print module but so far the functions are pretty rudimentary.

You may also want to view this video. https://luminous-landscape.com/imageprint-overview-making-printing-easier/   And this . . .  https://luminous-landscape.com/colorbyte-imageprint-9/ .

Hope this helps somewhat.

Kevin, the pricing of Imageprint puts it in the realm of professionals. Besides, it's an inefficient workflow for me. When I worked with Aperture (of blessed memory), it was a one stop shop. So I'll stick with the awkward C1 module. But does that mean when working on an Epson P800 using Canson or Ilford baryta papers I should turn off the "printer manages colour" and use the C1 manager?

For sake of giving you a good answer, I'll try out printing from C1 later this week when I am at the gallery.  I'll come back to you with the results as well as do a compare to IP.

That's very generous of you, Kevin. Thanks for trying to clear my confusion. I'm still looking forward to your complete review of C1v.11(whenever that comes out) ;D

Hi,

For what it's worth I print on an Epson 3800 through C1 on Windows 10. I select my paper profile in the C1 print dialog and turn off colour management in the printer. Normally stick with perceptual rendering and add a bit of print sharpening (using the slider in the C1 printer dialog).

I'm very happy with the results. The biggest annoyance for me is that you can't create presets that remember all the settings (only the layout settings), so if you have to come out of the print dialog and back in again you have to setup everything again. lightroom printing presets are much better in this respect, but I prefer C1 overall as a program.

Regards, Andy.

Hi Ken

Kevin is right, C1 needs an overhaul here.  You could consider using Epson Print Layout as a poor man's ImagePrint.

It's free and it does offer a fairly straightforward route to printing.  If you're looking at a Tiff or a Jpeg in your C1 database you can simply right-click on it and choose Open With and then Epson Print Layout.

Mark has a good and recent article on it here - https://luminous-landscape.com/printing-can-fun-easy/

I still owe the printing part.  I got started and then left to run two workshops in the Palouse.  I'll finish the report when I am back next week.

Kenneth (OP), thank you for this question. I am in exactly the same boat. After Apple abandoned its Aperture users I went to LR. Hated it in general but liked its print capabilities okay. Now I'm a dedicated CO user but have had a hard time with its print features and how they interface with my Epson R2400.

However, I did do some testing with QTR, computer managed and printer managed settings and to be honest, for my B&W printing using Epson ABW gave me the best results. This is not what you'll hear most of the time and I'm using the standard Epson inks (not dedicated B&W sets or piezography). I also use a very narrow range of papers. So, while it might not be the ultimate set up I have made some very nice B&W prints this way. I'm not a pro, but I am pretty picky about my results. And, if, like me you want one stop shopping then play around in CO, trial and error and write down the workflow that works for you.

My biggest issue right now is formatting within CO. I simply cannot figure out how to get the image dimensions exactly right. It is either very counterintuitive or I'm missing something or it just isn't possible.

If I remember correctly, in LR you could adjust your image dimensions in the same way that you would use the crop tool. And if you wanted the proportions fixed you had that option, just like the crop too. There needs to be a better option in CO than fiddling with unfixed margin parameters or cell sizes for a single image.

Someone mentioned the Epson tool and I'm going to try that.
