Finland - the bog/mire/fens
« on: May 28, 2017, 06:42:55 am »

Hi all, I know there's a few Finns on the forum and I was hoping for some advice.

I'm doing a long term project on bogs here in Ireland and got some funds to travel abroad for a different cultural context and I am looking at Finland.

Curious as to the best time for me to do this, my plans are to fly to Oulu, rent a car and take it from there, I'll have about 10 days.  Not that interested in snow, so deep winter or its aftermath lead me to think that late Autumn might be the best time given some extended darkness which I want.

I can hike or even climb a little but nothing other than lightly, an hour or two out and back.    I mainly shoot at night, and the challenges of safety etc on the bog in the dark limit how far I can push this too.

The period October through March was my ideal period, though I have to factor my regular job into all that.   But looking like the first two weeks of November might be a good option.   Wondering what kind of conditions I could expect at that time.

I see there is the Hirvisuo Mire near Oulu which I can fly to so that might be my starting point, and wonder if any of the Finns know of other bogs/mires/fens of note that I should consider?

I realise the cold issues and the need for extra batteries and warmth, my X-T2 can handle -10C according to Fuji and apparently even much colder than that.

Again I am hoping to drive for most of the travel, can stay in hostels/cabins.   All thoughts welcome.

Hi Tommy,

I spend a lot of time on mires in nearby Kiruna, Sweden. Great subject. A few shots are here (ignore the rocky ones!):

Oulu is near the coast so I would expect November temps around zero and probably no snow. On the other hand, you're near the Arctic circle so the days are short with long dawn and dusk periods, great light.

Kiruna is higher and colder, but there are mires close to roads, trails for night access, hostels, and an airport. You could access a great variety of mires within a few km.

Have fun.
