Not my pet, but a great model, nevertheless.
I think, I posted one of the images before in another thread, but can't find it now

That first one is fantastic! Such intensity in that little dog.

Out for a walk and shoot last night with Luna. She got all nervous and started sounding the alarm at things like a pile of rocks. Maybe she could smell or sense some predators around but I never saw anything. Nice calm evening after a very windy afternoon.

Hi Dave, I know just how you feel, I don't know what it is about our pets that makes their loss so keenly felt.

Matt, I expect that Luna did indeed sense or smell something that alarmed her, perhaps the winds uncovered something that she then could smell?

Definitely possible.
We have coyotes, bobcats, and lions around.
There are definitely smelly things here too as Luna rolled on a dead skunk carcass while my wife was walking her along the creek a couple of days ago.  :o

OK, but she doesn't have the essential charm of Miss Coke.

Rob, I bet the vet & food bills are pretty low!! I read somewhere that the "average" cost to own dog over it's lifetime is around 16 thousand bucks. There's an animal emergency center near us, it's basically a level one trauma center for pets. We had to bring one of our guys in once and it was just heartbreaking to see how many people could simply not afford the $$ of the treatments and had to either walk away or have their pets put down. I always swore that if I ever came into big bucks (lotto, etc.) that I would sponsor a fund to spare people this horrible choice!!

Yes, it can cost a lot of money. Our last dog had two separate cancer ops. with each consisting of the removal of a complete side of mammary glands. She survived for quite a while, between ops, but eventually it spread elsewhere and nothing could be done. She died across my lap on the kitchen floor, the vet telling me, as she withdrew the syringe, that tears are not unusual. We never had another animal, not because of cost but because of heartbreak. Twice is more than enough.

But on the cost aspect, yes, not only vet fees, but also kennels when, as in our case, business travel still meant several weeks at a time away from base several times a year.

But the love of a large dog is something special.

We've been very fortunate in that the neighborhood people are all pretty close and since many of us have pets, we all serve as pet minders when someone goes away. I expect that it's saved untold $$ in kennel fees as well as being a win-win for the pets and the owners.

It seems that one of the members of my club bought an Elkhound poppy 3  months or so ago. I just found out about this the other day and asked him to send me some pix. Well everyone, this is Odin!! I'll add to the gallery as needed, enjoy!!!
