I don't think it does have an indicator other than a slow ready light. However I can tell you that many brand new batteries are not up to the 580EX. You need really good Max types. That is why many use the CPE-4 or similar external power supplies.

Thanks Bob, actually normal alkaline AA last very long with the 580 EX. I don't use external power anymore. But would be nice to know / have indicator
