Hasselblad H2 AF front focus
« on: July 28, 2006, 01:59:12 pm »

i have a P45 attached to my H2.

recently i found all of my HC80 HC120 HC 150 lens fail to autofocus at infinity (very very soft image, especially at full aperture)

then i tested the lens carefully on closer objects (3 to 10 feet away) but all ends up with slight front focus... (slight but enough to blur)

all tests were done with a sturdy tripod and M.UP employed

anyway, manual focus turned out to be very accurate, so i think my P45 is okay but the H2 camera body.

please help... anybody with the same experience?

My 120 macro and my 80 focus short of the subject when using autofocus. I'm also finding really low definition from these lenses compared to my 210 and my 35mm both of which are fab. It seems the camera is struggling to determine the point of best focus, perhaps there isn't one. I'm thinking of buying a 100 f2.2 and a set of tubes. I can then get rid of the 80 and 120.

I had a front focus problem on an H1. I sent it to the main Hassy NJ service center and they said it was the AF chip in the H1 body. Hassy NJ couldn't estimate the cost of repair because it had to be sent to the EU to be repaired and only Hassy EU could estimate the cost according to Hassy NJ. In order to get the estimate I would have to pay them to ship it to the EU and then wait up to three months. I told them no thanks since it was still covered by a DOA return policy. I purchased a new H1 and no problems since. The focus on the new body is spot on, fast and sharp.

The 120mm macro is supposed to be one of the sharpest lenses.  I am really surprised by your finding.  I am using the 35mm, 50-110, and soon the 210mm. I am pleased with the optics of the 35 and 50-110 at this point.  When i was in Colorado, i used the zoom 90% of the time. I think there were one or two shots that I would have loved using the 210mm. I'll chime in, although it's probably not the answer you want to hear; I find the focus is tack sharp on all of the lenses I have (35, 50, 80, 120, 150, 210 and 300). I shoot an H2 with a film back and have had no focus problems in over 700 rolls of film since November 2005.

As with any auto focus, sometimes it hunts, but that is normal.

If I recall correctly, there was someone with a 300 that had infinity focus problems, check this link out:

(search on "focus")

Good luck and please let us know what happens.

Derek.. How is the sharpness and optics of the 120 compared to the 150 or the 210mm?  Have you ever used an extender on the 150 or 210 to compare with the macro?

I wish I could show you the quality, but the file sizes are 350MB when scanned and when I JPG them down you lose the quality due to compression. Remember, since I'm shooting film I lose a bit from the scanning (Nikon 9000).

I don't personally notice a quality difference between any of the lenses, but a better trained eye may. There is something special about the 120.

To my surpirse, the 1.7x Extender is very sharp on the 300mm. I did not expect this to be the case! I just returned from a 2+ week shoot in South Dakota and I used the 1.7x on the 120mm but I have not gotten to those shots yet. I can tell you the gear stands up well in the dust, dirt and elements.

Do you mean extension tubes? I have only used the extension tubes on the 120mm, so I can't give you a comparison.

I have considered the 100 f2.2, but I don't notice the need when I have the 80 and the 120.

I find my 120 is great close up and I am only having trouble shooting at about 20 - 30 ft. The AF goes into a very slow crawl to the endstop then it crawls back and settles out of focus. None of my other lenses do this. I know I can limit the focus range of the lens but I tried this and it still ends up focussing short. This is my second 120 already as my first one developed a shutter fault that couldn't be repaired apparently. I've used extension tubes on the 80mm and a 150mm (loaned to me by Hasselblad while I waited for my replacement lens) and the shots were not a touch on the 120. The 120 is definately the ideal close up optic.

I was not surprised to read on Luminous Landscape how poorly both the 80 and the 120 performed in the group test. The zoom was much sharper.

Can you explain what you mean by "not a touch on the 150" and are you saying the 50-110 was sharper than the primes in the same focal range?

I almost purchased a 50-110, but I'm not Michael or some famous photographer, I would have to pay Hasselblad thousands to "fix" it when it "falls apart." I have had enough service issues thank you. I don't really need a zoom with the photography I do, I'll haul the lenses on a hike.

Maybe I don't have the "experienced" eye, I see these lenses as being sharp--but you guys probably have more experience with other lenses for comparison.

I have had no issues with my 50-110 to date. I took it hiking with me for a week in Colorado.  I used it 93% of the time.  The 35mm the other 7%.  One or two shots would have liked the 210mm, which i have on order

I find that the 120 is a challenge to focus because the focus scale is so compressed at medium distances and further. I have also seen that lens focus incorrectly on a couple of H bodies, especially if the lens has the full focus range enabled.

The 120 produces clean sharp images close up. It has a tendency to incorrectly focus at longer range - wedding groups etc. It focusses short - shorter than any object in the frame. When it is sharp, it is not as good as the 150 I was lent when my 120 broke the first time. Put the 150 on a stack of extension tubes though and the quality really drops off quickly. The 120 is a beast of a lens and is heavier than my 210mm and my 35mm lenses.

I'm told the front focus H2 must be sent back to the factory, in Sweden, for repair.
and it's gonna take 3 weeks, or maybe at most 3 months.

No backup H2 or H1 provided by Hasselblad, oops!!

The 120mm Macro is still sharp at infinity, on my P45 (manual focus)
but the one corner of the image looks out-of-focus soft.
i guess there is  some quality issue. oops again!!

Never expected these to happen on such hell expensive Hasselblad.

In France they seem to have the same sort of repair method and delay; It looks as if someone buying H needs to be able to budget for a spare body/lens  or just buy a 5D when this happens. I was told that there is a $3K replacement warranty available for H2D buyers. Brand M looks more attractive every day ...
