Z3200 matte canvas options
« on: November 18, 2016, 02:15:47 pm »

Does any one have experience with HP Professional Matte canvas vs Breathing Color Lyve. In both cases will be coating canvas with Breathing color Timeless Gloss.

I switched from Breathing Color Chromata to Lyve recently and find it a great canvas to print on and handle. I only coat with Glamour but would expect Timeless to be just as good if not better.

I have been using HP Pro Matte Canvas for about 10 years, and have printed and wrapped many pieces in sizes up to 40 x 60 inches. I've also printed many panorama pieces up to 84 inches long. I first began printing on HP Pro Matte with my 44" HP Z3100, and after seven years, I replaced the HP printer with a Canon IPF8400, which I have been using for the past few years.

I like the weave in the HP Pro Matte, and much prefer it over the BC Lyve weave, as I believe it shows better detail. The canvas stretches very well, and I have never had a customer complaint about any piece that I have produced. I generally spray it with six coats of BC Timeless Satan, but I have also used the BC Timeless Matte. I haven't tried the BC Timeless Glossy, so cannot comment about that.

Over the years I have tried other canvas, but I continue to favor the HP Pro Matte. Get a small roll and give it a try.

HP changed the HP Professional Matte Canvas from their original, I believe, based on a different manufacturer.
The new canvas is not the same as the old, which is definitely a shame.  I used to use it for years and years and since the change, no longer do.
Check the skew numbers and compare old and new, and there's a distinct difference.  You can't buy the old HP Pro anymore.

Really, Breathing Color canvas products are the best IMHO.  FWIW / YMMV.

Mark, I agree that the HP Pro Matte has changed over the years, as do most canvas and paper products for ink jet printing.

If BC would change the weave of their products I would give them a try again.  I have tried other canvas products with a weave similar to HP ProMatte, but they have all had a magenta color cast to my eye. I'll stick with what my clients prefer, which is the finished look of HP Pro Matte.

I encourage the OP to try several brands of canvas, and to get a custom profile for the one he prefers. Then stick with it to learn how to get the best print possible..

Best, Mary

Agreed Mary.  I have not been able to find a weave as nice as the original HP Pro.

I haven't noticed the magenta color cast, in BC canvas however.  Weird.

I tried the Lexjet Sunset fancy pants canvas and hated it.

HP changed their HP Litho Realistic paper as well - and not even close to the original.

But you're right, life goes on.

If you happen upon just a fantastic canvas please let me know.

Best,

Mark

Most likely happened in 2013 when the BMG Brand Management Group took over the HP media distribution and possibly media purchase. They did the same for Kodak and some media qualities of both brands are now the same. With the BMG transfer the HP Matte Litho Realistic changed. I recall that BMG shared the Innovaart booth at the Photokina in 2012 and had several Innova qualities in the catalog. Not sure if that is still the case.

No experience with the new HP Professional Matte Canvas but the old quality was very good, stretched well on my homemade pneumatic stretcher too.  Little canvas is printed here these days.

Edit; I see that they are together with Lexjet in the same holding company;

Thanks for the link Barry.  The original HP Pro Matte Canvas came in 42" wide, not 44" that would be max for the Z3200.  The 36" would be great for smaller canvases and it is getting hard to find.  Have not been able to find original 42" wide.  When I order it, the send the new skew number box.  When I call, they all say they don't have the old anymore.

What don't I like about the new canvas?

The weave is completely different.  The luminosity is much diminished.  The look and feel is not right in comparison.
Seems just flimsy and flat in comparison.  If it was wine, the old was like a Margot, and the new is like Ripple. (Not that I ever had any Ripple, LOL).
Just apples and oranges from my perspective.  Just not at all in the same ballpark.  But for anyone new, who never used the original no doubt won't know what they are missing.
