NAS Backup (Mac)
« on: October 24, 2016, 06:40:45 am »

I have a Synology NAS which I backup to a NAS connected USB 3 drive. The backup is part of the Synology packages and works great. It is however in a Synolgy compressed format. I would like to back the NAS in a Mac readable format. I have another USB 3 drive plugged into the NAS but at present I back it up manually. Is there a software package I can use to automate this backup?

For what it's worth, I suggest you rethink your strategy.
There is no such thing as a NAS Connected USB3 drive, as NAS stands for Network Attached Storage.
I suggest that you have the direct connected storage as your data as direct connected is much quicker than NAS.
Then you can back up to the NAS using TimeMachine and then you "should" be able to browse the backup for any required file using the finder.
However, I don't trust a NAS as backup. I use one, but only as a last resort after I back up to direct attached drives.
I alternate each night between HDD and NAS.

I am very well aware of what NAS stands for thank you. I can also assure you that I have 2 x WD 4Tb USB3 drives connected to my Synology DS716+ NAS. The NAS Raid 1 content is automatically backed up to one of the USB3 drives. TimeMachine is currently used to backup my MacBook Pro, my iMac and my MacBook Air to an Airport Extreme Time Capsule. I am quite happy with my current system architecture.

I will investigate Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my NAS to a USB3 drive in native Mac readable format.

https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/help/DSM/AdminCenter/file_rsync

So you can rsync from the NAS RAID volume to the external drive.  The issue is that the NAS wants to write to a BTFRS or EXT4 filesystem.  One thought is to do a Chronosync from the NAS share to the USB3 drive attached to a Mac.  Grab an old cheap Mac Mini?

You might want to check out Synology HyperBackup or Rsync which are both free applications that you can install on your Synology DiskStation.

I have been using Synology Diskstation 8-bay unies for years. They work great.
