A while ago, my wife was showing me some dresses in one of the catalogs she gets. Being a guy into photography, I was less interested in the dresses but more interested in the photographic techniques used.
I noticed a series of different outfits all being worn by the same model. Nothing unusual about that. But I first thought that this was a well trained model as she was able to reproduce the same modeling pose in multiple shots. But upon closer examination, I discovered that no, this was not multiple poses, it was the exact same pose with different outfits. Even strands of hair were the same and I, with my usual anal-retentiveness, busted out an old boxwood scale and took some measurements. Same pose.
Is this a common technique to take one model's pose as a baseline image and then photoshop several different outfits onto the image and use them?
This morning I saw the same thing in a different clothing catalog.
Is this a way of saving money? And if so, is this an ethical way of employing models?
