Largest gamut paper recommendation - Epson 9900
« on: August 15, 2016, 01:06:59 pm »

Most of the images that I print have deeply saturated vivid colors, and up until recently I haven't had many problems fitting within the gamut of my printer/paper combinations. However I just ran into an issue with a bunch of images that have a large amount of deep/dark blues which are falling far outside the gamut causing color shifts.
My most frequently used papers are either Museo Silver Rag or Epson Ultra Premium Luster, which I create my own profiles for on a Spectroscan with Bill Atkinson's targets.
I'd like to know what glossy/luster paper would have the largest gamut achievable in combination with the K3 inkset, or maybe this is just a limitation of what the K3 inkset can produce?

Just to rule out one possibility, have you made a custom profile for the Premium Luster?  The deep/dark blues is one of the biggest differences from my custom profile to the standard Epson profile. Looking at Bill's Balls (hey, I didn't name them), 14 set edition, the one ball comes out almost completely black. In the custom profile, that same ball now has a color range and detail.

Just a thought,

Depends on how much out of gamut the blues are. The premium luster has one of the largest gamuts. One thing you can try is increase color densite setting to +10% . To my knowledge the increase in Max saturation is stringent in the blue part of the spectrum.

Hi Tony,
Yes I did. In fact I create a new profile for every new batch of paper that I get just in case there are some variations from batch to batch.
When I soft proof Bill's balls (no pun intended) my custom profiles are definitely way much better in the deep blues compared to Epson's canned profiles, however that dark blue ball is still almost entirely outside the gamut as seen in the screen capture.
I have a feeling it's just a limitation of what the K3 inkset is capable of.

Hi Jan,
Yes based on my tests of many different papers a few years ago, Epson's luster had one of the highest gamuts which is why I use it frequently.
The ink density increase is a good idea which didn't cross my mind.
I'm going to try and create several more profiles, with the ink density increased in 10% increments, i.e. 10%, 20%, 30%, etc.. and see if I can increase the gamut that way.

Not all of Epson's profiles are created equally! The luster isn't so hot.

Epson's claim for the x900 printer's wide gamut was based on the gamut of Epson Proofing White Semi-Matte. I guess they did not take the weakest performing paper for the ads. Although blue colors on an OBA free paper may not meet the saturation of the reds.

Try making a custom profile (using a high quality profiling kit) for Epson Legacy Baryta, Canson Baryta Photographique or Ilford Gold Fibre Silk. Those should provide about the widest gamut you'll get from the x900 series inkset.

Thanks Mark,
I will definitely give those papers a try.

Hi Ernst,
Would you happen to have the spectral measurement of the Ilford Gold Fibre Gloss in the database? I can't seem to find it.

Zachary,

I depend on what paper distributors and printer users send me as samples. Two A4s or at least two pieces half that size. Usually I collect more when I visit the Photokina but it might not happen this year.
