1Ds Mark II Error
« on: June 12, 2006, 08:49:36 pm »

I would immensely appreciate your advise..
I noticed horizontal lines/shadows on my picture ( intermittently)...symmetrically placed so I knew it was a "digital " issue

I sent it to canon...factory warranty..etc and they "fixed a CMOS attachment"...

First pic I take...same thing ( Even though I sent them a printed example )
I dont think the guy who fixed it knows the prob..
any ideas??

Here is a Magnified (100 %) crop of the error ( that's a flower and wall..both Dont have the vertical ( cam was being held vertically) lines

That's pretty bad.  I would call that a defect in the readout circuitry.

All Canon DSLRs have slight banding, but that is far beyond normal in its intensity.

Wow ! You are quite good ( should I resend it to canon and say this is a banding issue).. what would have to be fixed /changed?

Yes, banding issue, and much more than normal.

Although I'm surprised at how a 1Ds Mk II can have such issues...

No offence, but are you an amateur photographer that just happens to have money to buy that Canon?

Hello,

I had such an issue too with my old Canon 1Ds - now with
the Ds II I´m free of it.

I had this issue two times, the first time Canon fixed it
free (under warranty) but not at the second time, they
charged me EUR 900 for it (more than USD 1000,--).

I was really angry about such poor quality (not the images!) -
so I dumped the camera at ebay....

best,

Andreas.

I've seen a number of 1Ds images where the RAW file had clearly different levels of amplification on odd and even lines.  Since there are green pixels on all lines, and green is heavily weighted for luminance, the modulation is seen by converters as a luminance event, and this results in a checker-board luminance overlay that gets exaggerated in a 67% view in PS.  The red and green pixels, of course, are modulated, too, but independently, so their difference is only seen as a white balance event, which converters can counter-balance.

I don't think you're getting any more pixel-level readout quality with the professional series.  Better weather-proofing, f/8 AF, fps, etc, are what you're paying for.

Hello Everyone -Thank You for your replies ( as there is no human tech to talk to on the canon end of the line)

First question-Yes ...I am an amateur (cardiologist if you should have any ?s in that dept. ! ) who happens to have bought a 1Ds ...

And....curiuos--did Canon explain why that error was occuring? (and recurring ! )

(and this is the Mark II 1Ds).

The camera is at Canon's factory repair now..im Very eager to see what they ""diagnose"

The last gentleman's answer---is over my head ! (but thank you !)
