Missing Test "Measuring Megabytes" at 400 ASA
« on: June 09, 2006, 04:27:12 am »

Hi there,

with interest I read your test comparing a lot of things with obvious results.
For conditions in a photographic studio the test seems OK for me.

I miss a comment pointing out, that these conditions might not to be transferable to outdoor photography, specially with 400, 800 ASA, as people photography with medium format cameras uses to be done due to the optical construction of this kind of equipment compared with 35mm-based cameras.

I wonder how things change comparing the image quality of digital backs higher than 160 ASA to the digital image quality of digital-35mm reflex cameras and high quality scanned c-41 film (120 and 4/5 inch) at 400 ASA.

Another important point for the overall quality of digital images is imho the character of dynamic range and highlightclipping of digital or film above 100 ASA.

I guess if under these additional conditions you will have a quite different overall result of your tests?

There are some high ISO files on the disk as well. You are free to draw your own conclusions from them.

This was never intended to be a comprehensive test of all aspects of image quality from these cameras. That would have been far beyond our capabilities.

We chose one aspect of performance to concentrate on.

Thanks for the information and kind reply Michael,
for me it´s OK knowing the differences. If you have high ASA files aviable on the disk, maybe you find some time to release them additionally in the online-article as an update?
First of all it will be interesting for the avarage internet-surfer.

Well, this was just a little bit of "blockhead"-gossip for sportive reasons only.
And now let´s return back to the important things in life.

The files are far too large to put online.

If anyone is interested in them, $9.95 hardly seems like a financial strain so as to be able to see the raw files for ones self.

If it is a problem, then, as you say, the query was "sportive", at best.
