Adapter Contax 645 to Sony - any experiences?
« on: July 23, 2016, 02:42:38 pm »

I have save some of the best Contax lenses that I would love to use again (120, 55 and 35).
I see on ebay that it is produced an adapter for Sony:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fringers-Auto-Focus-Adapter-for-Contax-645-Lens-to-Sony-NEX-7-A7-A7rII-A7II-A7S-/272246051156?hash=item3f63211154:g:CqkAAOSwQaJXSE8E

Have any of you tested it? I am not worried about af speed, but love love to know is the adapter
is tight and works as it should.

No... but I have a Contax 645 lens adapter for Nikon (the JAS adapter) and it works great... It caused me to sell all my Nikkor glass but the 17-35 f2.8 as to have for UWA where the Contax doesn't provide a focal length for and then the 24 & 85 PC lenses as to have TS functions... AF is as fast as Nikkor AFS lenses too. The Nikon cameras I have are of 36 & 16mp sensors.

I also have an inexpensive Contax N to Sony E mount adapter which I use as to have Contax 645 lens interface control on my view camera with a 24mp Sony α7 ΙΙ (since the Contax N lens interface is exactly the same as with the C645)... Image quality is again great even with movements, but I (obviously) can't comment at all on the physical contact of the C645 lenses when used directly on the Sony. I use the Nikons instead for that.

Thank you, Theodoros!
Maybe I should go for the JAS instead. I have a Nikon D800.
How is the AF speed? Just like it would be on the Contax 645?

Not at all... It is much faster and much more accurate than the Contax... it is as good as with Nikon AF-S lenses! It seems that it is the C645 body to blame for the slow and hunting of the C645 lenses on their mother body. It looks like it is the ancient AF system used on the Contax body that is to be blamed... Nothing to do with the motors in the lenses whatsoever... they perform like a gem when combined with a good AF system like the one in modern Nikon bodies.

I've tried 120 APO lots of times using the camera's LV ability... I don't think there's an alternative for macro lenses available for Nikon that can even dare to stand up against it...  This is not an opinion of mine that one should take with some salt... I'm Using Nikkors for 32 years and am fully aware of the capabilities of Nikkor micro glass as I've owned and used for many years the 55/3.5, 55/2.8, 105/2.8D, 105/2.8 IFED AFS and still own and use the 85/2.8 micro PC...
