Vello Nikon to E mount adapter questions
« on: June 14, 2016, 06:02:23 pm »

This adapter is now in stock at B&H,

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1217137-REG/vello_lae_se_nf_nikon_f_lens_to.html

Does anyone have experience with this?  I was totally unimpressed with the quality of the Metabones adapter for Nikon to E mount, having to send mine to SK Grimes to get a Nikon 24-120 removed as it jammed.

Like the idea, but still a bit worried.  I briefly used the Novoflex Nikon to E mount, and it's construction is 100% superior to the metabones, however you do not have any aperture clicks, so it's next to impossible to figure out what aperture you have selected, (a bit important to me).

Thanks in advance.

It chatters all over the place and makes you think you are destroying the AF-S motor on the lens which you probably are and works relatively poorly for AF.  If you want to use it in MF mode it's superior to the others you mentioned since it passes through EXIF data from the lens which can be useful for lens correction in post not to mention in cataloging by focal length if you care about that sort of thing.

As for the Novoflex, there are two ways to deal with the click less aperture, one is to simply open it all the way and then watch your exposure readout in the camera as you stop down, each stop change in exposure reading equals one full f-stop.  I did that initially and then after noticing that it's relatively consistent from lens to lens just put a sticker on the adapter to indicate aperture marks.  The Fotodiox adapter by the way does have clicked stops.

Paul: I am pretty sure this is a re-branded Commlite adapter. I have one, and just upgraded to firmware 3.0. Here are my findings:
Nikon 85mm f1.8 ---AF works fine
    Nikon 50mm f1.8----ditto
Nikon 14-24mm AF is OK, but initially would not AF, Removed and reattached  the adapter and lens and now is OK
Nikon 60mm Micro f2.8 ---AF does not work at all.
Tamron Nikon mount 70-300 VC lens---Sporadic operation: sometimes AF works fine, sometime the lens hunts and will not lock on
Nikon 105mm Micro IS: AF does not work at all.
Tamron 150-600mm Nikon mount----AF does not work
    Manual focus Zeiss 18mm ZF2 and 35mm f2 & Voigtlander 90mm f3.5 APO manual lenses----manual focus works fine.
Still a work in progress, more firmware updates are promised.
    Hope this helps

Dave,

Thanks for the info.  The 14-24 is key for me.

Hopefully firmware will fix a lot of the issues.

It is a rebadged Commlite.  Good to see that the FW updates are improving the product.

Hi Paul: I have the Zeiss 16~35 in native FE mount for my A7RII, so I have not yet tried the Nikon 14~24. I plan to try it soon.
