Epson 9900 print head source in Canada?
« on: June 14, 2016, 04:03:38 pm »

Well, after years of babying my Epson 9900 (ie: I keep it in a cool, humidity-controlled location, and print a minimum of two letter size full-spectrum images every day without fail ... my Magenta channel won't clear.  Of course I read Eric's postings with morbid fascination as he went though his own saga, and I'm confident that I can replace the head easily enough (Eric's video is very easy to follow) ... but I'm not sure where to start with getting a new printhead (and dampers and wiper) from Epson.

Fellow lula posters from Canada have said that Epson Canada is the place to go ... but I'm not sure where to start. I'd be grateful if anyone who's successfully purchased on could point me to the right phone number or webpage or something!

Thanks!

I ended up going through a variety of Epson people before getting to the right person.
The number is 562-276-1305, although you can also start with 800-234-1445.

The part number has changed from F191110 to F19140.

Changing the head and dampers was pretty straightforward, helped by Eric's great video.
Anyone who can follow directions should be able to replace the print head,
although I found that it took a solid afternoon to do everything.
This might be because I took the slow/deliberate route - it can probably be done in under an hour.

Right after placing the print head order, I noticed that Vistek Canada has the P9000 on for $5,649 CDN.
With the new print head, dampers, and wiper blade coming to $2,400 US (about $3,200 CDN), I think that I actually was silly to replace the print head instead of getting a new P9000 (which would have had better blacks, possibly less of a tendency to clog, and a warranty). Sigh...

It actually turned out that the prices I paid were in Canadian dollars, which made the print head replacement more economical.

After replacing the print head, I re-printed a canvas that had just sold, and was surprised to discover that the shadows were noticeably deeper - to the point of blocking up detail that was preserved the last time I printed the image. Further investigation confirmed that the colour balance was fine with Epson's profiles, but the shadows were all much darker - correcting them in Camera Raw or Lighroom required a shadow adjustment of about +30.

That wasn't acceptable to me, so I ended  up creating my own paper profiles, rather than relying on Epson's canned profiles. They are working nicely for me.

Hi John.

Do you have the link to Eric's video replacing an Epson printhead?

Kind regards
