Monsal Dale, English Peak District
« on: May 31, 2016, 02:20:37 pm »

Headstone Viaduct at Monsal Dale in the English Peak District. Built in 1863 by the Midland Railway over the River Wye to carry rolling stock on the Manchester to Derby line. Whilst considered elegant today, when it was built it was seen as destroying the beauty of the dale. John Ruskin, considered to be Britain's leading writer on culture, having had many works published on architecture and art, as well as political works, harshly criticised the building of the railway. The viaduct was closed to trains in 1968.

Downstream of the viaduct is a fantastic semi-circular weir where a thick mist of spray rises up from the force of water when the river is in full flow.
