better remote sync option
« on: May 03, 2016, 03:46:31 pm »

I'm currently using H4x (leaf credo back) with Grafit A4 plus/Pulso head kit. Still have my old trusty Pocket Wizard Plus transmitter/Receiver kit from about 14 years ago. Will any of the newer pocket wizards or anything else help me get better sync speeds with the faster leaf shutter speeds?

I've noticed clipping with the pocket wizard over 1/500 with the pocket wizard but not at the same speed using the sync cable.

While it is very convenient (very small transmitter and remote power control) and possible to fit into your grafit packs, the "old" RFS system is also too slow for fast shutter speeds. If my mind serves me well the newer pocket wizards are faster and do actually work, I donĀ“t have personal experience with them though. Sorry for not being more helpful ;-)

Can a Grafit be updated to RFS2.1 as this will sync to 1/1500th sec? If possible this will also allow remote power/modelling control, all using an ultra small transmitter thats battery lasts forever.

All my packs use RFS2.1 so not sure if older pack can be upgraded to the latest version but worth contacting your local bron service centre to check.

The MultiMAX v2 might (i emphasize might) help as  they are programmable.

You can upgrade to the Pocket Wizard Plus III----and then set to "Fast Mode" allowing flash sync up to 1/1600 with requisite MFDB and Leaf shutter lenses.

See, https://captureintegration.com/definitive-guide-to-medium-format-high-speed-sync/

Just tested 3 sync options and found that I'm getting the same performance (in this pretty limited test) between the PW+ and the PW+3 in F mode.

I rigged up a Grafit A4plus pack with a Pulso G head and ran it at 3 different flash duration speeds and compared the PW+ and the PW+3 in F mode. Found that the +3 gave me a very slight edge, but nothing drastic. I ran a hard line for comparison in the first test as well. The numbers are just the average RGB numbers at a cross point in the center of the image using the grid in C1pro.

I knew I'd get clipping on the first scenario as it's a longer flash duration than the faster shutter speeds, but I was curious as to how much of a clip it would be.

I was hoping I'd get no clip in the 2nd scenario (as advertised I shouldn't but wanted to test) and was pleased to find out I basically didn't get any. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my 13 year old PW+ kit did just as well as the newer PW+3 here.

I wanted to find one more speed right in the middle and closer to just above the fasted shutter speed to see how much clip I'd get (if any ideally) and found that I DID get some but about the same in each kit (with a slight edge going to the newer PW+3 in F mode).

I did do one other scenario in the first set up (slow flash duration 1/575) where I had the PW+3 in normal mode (not fast) and found it actually was worse than the old PW+. I didn't include those numbers in this chart as I had actually ran that scenario by mistake and didn't think it was relevant to the test.
