Remote control panning head recommendation?
« on: March 07, 2016, 04:01:53 am »

Any recommendations for a programmable panning head that can hold a heavy DSLR+lens mounted on the end of a nodal slide?

I've played with a CamRanger one.  Are you doing Stills or Video?  I assume this is to automatically set rotation steps for a pano?  The CamRanger requires some wired connection to drive it.  What programmability are you needing?  Complete unattended automation?

I am pretty happy about my Clauss Rodeon Pixpert, but it's a bit expensive.

Cheers,
Bernard

I was thinking of the Dr. Claus Rodeon Pixpert as well, but the price might be outside the range you're considering.

There are also the Roundshot units made by Seitz.

Much simpler solutions are the Gigapan units, but they are much more limited and fragile, and not suited for some camera form-factors.

There are several Kickstarter projects, but I'm not too sure about how well these work in actual practice, and how reliable the support is.

And depending on what you exactly want, maybe an AstroTrac can be used even though it's designed for another purpose.

Cheers,
Bart

Check out a pan-tilt setup from Dynamic Perception

Designed for time-lapse, but can be programmed to use for panos.  Can be left alone after program starts.  The company is very responsive and products are well-made and modular.

I have the CamRanger unit, but I am not really sure it is up to the job as it wasn't designed  to support  approximately 4~5 lbs  (Canon 5DS + L plate+ EF 11-24mm f/4L+ nodal slide) of off-axis mass.

I will check out the Clauss Rodeon Pixpert and Dynamic Perception rigs . Thank you for the recommendation.

The Dynamic Perception STAGE R: PAN/TILT DIGITAL SYSTEM W/NMX MOTION CONTROLLER - READY-TO-RUN kit (http://www.dynamicperception.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=BDL%2DR%2DNMX1 )  my purposes looks like it will be the better choice. Thank you for the advice.

Those look interesting and I like that they are an all in one solution but I am concerned about their capacity to hold mass that that is completely off center on the end of a nodal slide.

Ellis, let me know if you have any specific questions on the Dynamic Perception gear - I've had mine for a couple years.  I don't use it a lot, but have been pretty happy with it.
